The Science Of Procrastination: Achieving My Goals

I've been on hive about 4 years. I love the community and I try to contribute value to it. When I arrived hive I started off with a few posts. Then comments. Consistency has always been a problem for me on hive. I mean showing up everyday to post or to comment on the posts of others. This is partly due to a medical condition I have ( connected to the Social Anxiety Disorder.) And it's partly because I'm a procrastinator.

There are days I want to write and publish posts or drop comments but I just keep putting it off until the day goes by. Sometimes I write a post and don't edit and publish it for a long time.

This habit procrastination also affects me in my daily activities. I have lots of goals and dreams. Like for example personal development goals but procrastination keeps getting in my way. There are several goals I set early this year but I'm still far from accomplishing them.

As time goes by I find ways to break this bad habit. One of those ways is something I read in the book, Atomic Habits by James Clear. I have also heard motivational speaker Jim Rohn talk about it. It's the 1% rule. This rule says

...that little efforts add up over time to produce great results.

So instead of trying to achieve a lot in a day or week I start small. I make efforts that won't make me feel overwhelmed. For example if I want to finish reading a voluminous book, instead of trying to read it in 4 days, I can just read 4 pages of it daily. That way I make progress, though slowly. Otherwise if I attempt to finish reading the book so quickly I might feel overwhelmed so I don't read it at all. Or I might read for sometime and stop.

This rule is really helping me overcome procrastination. Taking it a little at a time.

Another rule that helps me combat procrastination is the rule that says

...that we are influenced by our environment. The environment we stay in influences our actions.

To implement this rule I try to condition my environment to motivate me towards my goals. If I want to practice on my musical instrument daily I put the instrument where I can see it. I can also put posters on my room’s walls that remind me of playing an instrument.

I'm not saying I have a complete victory over procrastination but I am improving daily. These rules help me immensely.
