Hello all Hivians and good people of the Gems community. Most of us may not be aware of some major happenings or events around the globe that took place on this day many years ago. I will therefore take us round the globe in a giffey to have a look at some of those historical events that took place on this day, friday the 18/10/2024 in history.

We begin today from the USA. Do you know that on this day in 1867, the American flag was flown over Sitka, the capital, following the approval of a deal negotiated by U.S. Secretary of State William Seward to acquire the Russian colony of Alaska.

From the USA, we move over to Canada. Do you also know that on this day in 1919, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, a Liberal politician and Prime Minister of Canada from (1968–79; 1980–84) was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

From Canada, we move over to Pakistan. Now, on this day in 2007, Benazir Bhutto, the first female leader of a Muslim nation in modern history, returned to her home country after eight years of self-imposed exile. She was assassinated in December after being almost killed in a car bombing in Karachi a few hours later. Bhutto served as Prime Minister of Pakistan twice (1988–1990 and 1993–1996).

From Pakistan, we move over to Czech Republic. Do you know that on this day in 1956, Martina Navratilova, who dominated tennis in the late twentieth century and won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia [now in Czech Republic].

From Czech Republic, we move over to Puerto Rico. Now, on this day in 1898, Puerto Rico was turned over to the United States following the Spanish-American War.

Gentlemen, we'll round off our today's look in from Ivory Coast. Do you know that on this day in 1905, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, a politician and physician, who was the President of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) from independence in 1960 till his death in 1993 was born in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

My good people, that will be all from me today. Let's do it again tomorrow.
