Nice ! You've reminded me I need to get the hag coven in my world back into the game.

Last time around, each in turn was trying to perform a ritual to "level up" from green hags to nighthags (i.e. a cunning DM tool to keep them dangerous as the party grew in power). One had succeeded, the other two not yet.

It took the players a very, very long time indeed to realise that the friendly plump local healer-woman was one of them. The whole "spit into the cauldron to make the healing potions personalised and more effective" was a bit of a trick. Yes, the potions worked at maximum potential. But the remaining saliva at the bottom of the cooking pot gave them -10 on the saving throw when she did her daily scrying on them 😀

That's on top of the coven name being a clue... they called themselves the Magpie Sisters, and all the local corvids were their eyes and ears.
