May 2024 HPUD - HBD is earning more than HIVE
It's the first of May, and another Hive Power Up Day has come around.
Naturally I joined the fun ! I powered up 50 HIVE, and almost immediately delegated most of it back out again, split between @eds-vote and @leo.voter - both of them give useful returns at a good APR %.

Because it's also the month where the tax year end happens here in the UK. On 5th April, to be precise.
If you're wondering why it's such an odd date, it's down to historical quirks going back centuries.
When Julius Caesar introduced the Julian Calendar, named after himself because he had no ego problems whatsoever 🙄 New Year's Day was 1st January. After the Roman Empire fell, countries gradually started using the Feast of the Annunciation, March 25th, as New Year's Day. England moved to this date in 1155. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII (another chap with no ego issues....) introduced the Gregorian Calendar to correct creeping errors in the Julian one. England (by then not a Catholic country) delayed adopting this until 1752, by which time the calendar was 11 days out. To avoid losing tax revenue, the Treasury kept the tax year at 365 days, thus pushing the start of the new tax year out to 6th April.
Okay, now I've got the useless info about the historical background out of the way (and out of my system....), onward with some analysis......
April Earnings in Hive
In April, my Hive earnings looked like this;
Token | End of Month Price (GBP) | Earnings | Earnings (GBP) |
---|---|---|---|
HIVE | 0.2461 | 105.567 | 25.98 |
HBD | 0.7998 | 50.933 | 40.74 |
LEO | 0.0706 | 81.15 | 5.73 |
Two notable factors need to be taken into account.
First is that for all kinds of reasons I wasn't as active in terms of posting as usual, and this dropped my earnings considerably.
Second is that the price of HIVE took a tumble at the end of the month. This dropped the GBP value of earnings while HBD (being a stablecoin) held it's value.
But the biggest difference has come from my continued boosting of my HBD balance. I put something in every week on top of author rewards. I'm using a plan, picking a value from a range between 0.5 and 25.5 HBD bought a week, and allowing myself to pick how much I do each week depending on the price of HIVE. When HIVE is low, I buy just a small amount of HBD, when it jumps up, I buy a larger amount (because it costs me less HIVE per HBD).
Today was interest day, and for the first time I earned over 30 HBD in interest.
I'm now consistently earning more in HBD than HIVE ! But it's a mix of interest and rewards, so I'll still keep posting.
Tax Year Earnings in Hive
Looking at the year as a whole, it looks like this;
Token | End of Year Price (GBP) | Earnings | Earnings (GBP) |
---|---|---|---|
HIVE | 0.2461 | 1430.372 | 352.01 |
HBD | 0.7998 | 514.805 | 411.74 |
LEO | .0706 | 1264.71 | 89.33 |
£853 earnings from something which is at most a side hustle, and is really just an enjoyable social platform, is nothing to be sniffed at ! Shame I'll have to pay tax on it......
Those of you who follow my update posts in #SaturdaySavers will spot discrepancies between gains I report there, and the earnings I'm showing here. That's because the gains figure includes tokens I've bought, while the earnings figures in these posts are purely that - earnings from posting, curation, interest and occasional drips.
All in all, I'm happy with the way Hive is going for me. I occasionally get frustrated by the volatility of HIVE and tribe tokens, and the way "real life" gets in the way of posting as much as I'd like, but that's just life.
I hope your Hive is doing as well and you were able to power something up today !
