End-of-Life Care: When not treatment, care is necessary
Nursing is not only the responsibility of saving life, but it is also our responsibility to give dignity and relaxation at the last stage of life. When a patient is unlikely to recover, our focus changes, from treatment to care, and this care is not just the body, not only the body.
The end-of-life care is given when the patient is in the final stages of life. This includes reducing body problems, giving peace of mind, and emotional support to the patient and his family. This care is often given in the form of Paulti Care or Hospital Care.
Care of both body and soul
When the patient is going through his last phase, then every small problem becomes very big for him, sometimes there is pain in the body, sometimes it seems difficult to breathe. In such a time, only medicines are not enough. Many times, a soft voice, holding someone's hand or just sitting near someone is also very relaxed.
Our job is not only to fight their illness, but it is equally important to reduce the fear, restlessness and loneliness within them. These are the moments when the patient has to feel that he is not alone and someone is really understanding his suffering.
Respectable decisions and negotiations
Many times patients refuse treatment. In such a situation, we have to respect their decisions. If the patient has already written an "Advance Directive", such as DNR (do not resuscitate), then we should work accordingly.
It is very important to interact openly with the family and the patient. Sometimes they just want to hear that "you are not alone."
Our role in final moments
As the death comes near, patients keep sleeping, the pattern of breath changes, the body starts to cool-all these are signs of death. At such a time, our role becomes not just a nurse, but a partner.
We explainto the family about these signs, prepare them emotionally and support them at the last minute.
Conclusion
The end-of-life care is not just to make the end of the patient's life easier, but to fill their last moments with respect, peace and love. Even though we cannot extend the days of life, we can definitely fill life in those days.
