THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH
Social media has seriously done more harm than good to the society of young people. Firstly I will talk about ADDICTION; most young teens today are so glued to their phone that they don't have time to do other things. One thing main people don't know is that a used less brain will start becoming a useless brain. The brain is just like an engine that needs to be often used, but most young people today make use of their eyes more than their brains. The more someone is addicted to social media the harder it becomes to get out of it. If these set of people invest the time they use on social on education and skills, our world today will be more advanced.
ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION
Several studies have linked heavy social media use to increased levels of anxiety and depression in teenagers. Constant comparison with others, fear of missing out, and cyberbullying contribute to feelings of inadequacy and Social Anxiety and loneliness. Social media has made many young people aim for things that are not their level which makes them restless and until they get what they want.
FRAUDULENT ACTIVITIES
In the digital age, social media has become a fertile ground for various forms of fraud, including scams, impersonation, , and fake giveaways. While these fraudulent activities can affect anyone, adolescents are especially vulnerable due to their limited life experience, curiosity, and desire for social acceptance. The psychological effects of falling victim to fraud on social media can be serious and long-lasting.
Fraud on social media is more than just a financial or security issue, it has serious emotional and psychological consequences, especially for adolescents. It can harm their mental health by triggering anxiety, shame, and social isolation. To protect young users, it's important for parents, schools, and communities to provide education on online safety, promote open communication, and offer support if a teen falls victim to social media fraud.
Social Isolation
Excessive use of social media can lead to real-life social isolation. Teens may substitute face-to-face interaction with virtual communication, this can weakening their interpersonal skills. This activities also reduces physical activity, further affecting mental well-being.
To control all this schools, parents and guardians need to monitor the young people all them. The can set boundaries and limit to their access to social media and also make them to focus on positive content on social media.
Moderation is the key to social media usage amongst teens.
