Today I went into the city for a quick look around and to do something for a friend. The visit was near Karolinenplatz, where the obelisk stands. It's not a stolen obelisk, as you often see in England, but an obelisk that was built for Munich. I like this square and also Königsplatz, which is not far away. Maxvorstadt has a lot to offer architecturally.
I was in Munich for the first time exactly 23 years ago. My father had a conference at the Ammersee and we both drove to Munich in an old Audi 80. I sold this car after 4 years, in 2006, with 496000 km. 23 years ago, I drove from the Ammersee to Munich without a sat nav to see the city. It was a very nice spring day, then as now, and I thought the old buildings were beautiful. I love the old architecture, from classicism and baroque to art nouveau, which is what Munich is all about. Then I came to Ludwigsstraße and it was full of students. The warm and cosy atmosphere left its mark on me. I myself was in the first year at university, aged 18. Little did I know that 23 years later I would be living here and my child would be born here. So much has changed in that time. My father has got much older, so have I. The Audi 80 with all those kilometres on it still exists today, but my father sees it parked in another city. I live here now and am grateful for the life I have.

Heute war ich kurz in der Stadt, um mich umzusehen und etwas für einen Freund zu erledigen. Die Besichtigung war in der Nähe des Karolinenplatzes, wo der Obelisk steht. Es ist kein gestohlener Obelisk, wie man ihn oft in England sieht, sondern ein Obelisk, der für München gebaut wurde. Ich mag diesen Platz und auch den Königsplatz, der nicht weit entfernt ist. Die Maxvorstadt hat architektonisch viel zu bieten.
Vor genau 23 Jahren war ich zum ersten Mal in München. Mein Vater hatte eine Konferenz am Ammersee und wir sind beide mit einem alten Audi 80 nach München gefahren. Dieses Auto habe ich nach 4 Jahren, im Jahr 2006, mit 496000 km verkauft. Vor 23 Jahren fuhr ich ohne Navi vom Ammersee nach München, um mir die Stadt anzusehen. Es war ein sehr schöner Frühlingstag, damals wie heute, und ich fand die alten Gebäude wunderschön. Ich liebe die alte Architektur, vom Klassizismus, Barock bis zum Jugendstil, was München ausmacht. Dann kam ich auf die Ludwigsstraße und es war voll von Studenten. Die warme und gemütliche Atmosphäre hat mich geprägt. Ich selbst war im ersten Jahrgang an der Universität, mit 18 Jahren. Ich wusste nicht, dass ich 23 Jahre später hier leben und mein Kind hier geboren werden würde. In dieser Zeit hat sich so viel verändert. Mein Vater ist viel älter geworden, ich auch, den Audi 80 mit den vielen Kilometern gibt es heute noch, mein Vater sieht ihn in einer anderen Stadt geparkt. Ich lebe jetzt hier und bin dankbar für das Leben, das ich habe.

It's impossible not to be grateful for what got us here. Even if, many times, all that got us here were just experiences. It's not just the destination that matters, it's also the path. And on the road of life, it's a bit like the road you took with your father in the Audi 80. Without GPS. You have to trust that the destination is there. Waiting for us. Thanks for sharing your memory. It reminded me of the journeys I made with my parents, when I was not yet 18, and at the time they had a green Mini 1000. It wasn't spacious, and it wasn't comfortable either... At least for trips of more than 50 km. But the memories are forever. As for the car, I still remember the license plate today. It was from 1976 and must have gone to an old car collector. It had almost 130,000 km on the clock when it was sold. The odometer only registered up to 99,999km. It turned around. Just as our lives sometimes turn around. Cheers
