What is Telemedicine?
Telemedicine is simply the use of electronic devices such as your smart phones and computers to access healthcare services from the comfort of your home. This creates room for patients to virtually consult doctors and other health specialist to receive diagnosis and also get prescriptions without going to see the consultant physically.
Benefits of telemedicine
• Easy access to health services: The use of telecommunication allows the patients to easily access health services without having to travel for a very long distance just to go and see the doctor in the hospital. This will really help a lot of people who live in rural areas. Those who are disabled can also communicate virtually with the health specialist without having to struggle to get to see the doctor. This will also help in reducing cost and saving time.
• Reduce risk of contracting diseases: The use of telemedicine will tremendously reduce the high risk of contracting transmitted diseases. Take for instance the covid 19 pandemic outbreak where a lot of doctors and health practitioners contracted the disease at the cause of treating the patients. Imaging that most of the consultation were done virtually, the doctors would have been safe.
These are just few out of many other benefits. In as much as telemedicine have a lot of benefits, it also has some challenges. And some of those challenges are:
• Limited access to electronic devices and internet in rural area: a lot of people in the rural area are not technologically inclined. As such they do not have the electronic devices, they can use such as smart phones and computers. Also, most places in the rural areas are usually faced with network challenges, which make it difficult for them to access the internet even is they have the devices.
• Limited to proper check and examinations: Using telemedicine will actually restrict the consultants from getting to touch and feel the body of the patients when necessary. He or she only depends on the information provided by the patients. So this can limit the doctor from carrying out a proper check and examination on the patients.
So, I would like to conclude my submission by saying that the future of telemedicine has begun and it has helped in shaping the modern healthcare. Even though there are still some challenges affecting the smooth run of telemedicine, I strongly believe that the advancement of technology will gradually eliminate those challenges in the nearest future.
Thanks for reading my submission and I hope you have a good time reading.
