EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES/TIPS FOR STUDYING AND UNDERSTANDING MATHEMATICS

Good day everyone, I’m @akwash360, and I’m happy to be part of this great community where teaching and learning is the goal. I love being in such an environment because it contributes to my intellectual growth and enhances my skills as an online mathematics teacher. A huge thanks to the founder, admins, and moderators of the group for this awesome initiative.

Having identified some of the common challenges students face while studying and understanding mathematics, I will be sharing my experiences and some useful tips that can help students overcome such challenges. This concern has been raised by many students, as I have received these questions countless times from my online students. So, I will do my best to highlight some great tips that will be helpful if followed diligently. Let’s get started!

Vital Tips to Improve Your Understanding of Mathematics
1. Understand the Basic Concepts
All mathematical questions are derived from general concepts. Therefore, understanding the foundational concepts is key, as it helps in choosing the right formulae to arrive at the correct solution. For example, if you do not understand basic mathematical operations and their meanings, applying them correctly becomes a challenge. Everything starts with getting the basics right.

2. Practice and Solve Similar Problems
The best way to demonstrate that you understand a concept is by practicing and solving similar problems. Over the years, I have observed that students often claim to understand a concept after being taught, but when given a problem to solve, they struggle. Understanding a concept is one thing; putting it into practice is another. Regular practice is the key to mastering mathematics.

3. Use Multiple Resources to Study
A common mistake among students is relying on a single resource for learning. Using only one textbook or study material is not an effective way to study, in my opinion. Thanks to technology, students now have access to various online study materials such as e-books, YouTube videos, learning applications, and more. Utilizing these resources will greatly enhance the learning process and improve understanding.

4. Stay Consistent and Be Patient with Yourself
As the saying goes, “Learning never ends.” Learning is a gradual process with no fixed end. Do not get frustrated if you don’t understand a concept instantly. Besides, forcing yourself to grasp everything immediately can overwhelm your brain. Take it easy, be patient with yourself, and remain consistent in studying the concepts and practicing problems.

5. Be Part of a Community of Maths Learners
One important lesson I have learned over time is that self-learning mathematics can be discouraging. Sometimes, you need to be part of a community (Be it online or physical) to stay motivated and consistent. Being in a group helps you grow as an individual, as you learn from others while also sharing your knowledge with those who may need your help.

By following these tips, you can develop a better understanding of mathematics and improve your problem-solving skills. Keep practicing, stay consistent, and never stop learning!
