Some Species of Orb-Weaver Spiders in Sumatra

Lately I have been so interested in the world of spiders. I have taken so many pictures of different types of spiders. This is not meant to be research about them because I am not an arachnologist. I do this just for fun because I love spiders.

Here I share some species of orb-weaving spiders captured using my phone camera. Araneidae, or orb-weaver spiders, are a family of spiders that have a cosmopolitan distribution with more than 3000 species spread throughout the world. You can see three of them below.

The barn spider (Neoscona sp.) is an orb-weaver spider belonging to Araneidae. Most orb-weaver spiders build large webs in the voids between trees or bushes, while this one only spins a narrow web on twigs or leaves. The spider is bright red, which probably indicates that it is a female.

The Laglaise's garden spider, or species Eriovixia laglaizei, is an orb-weaver spider belonging to the family Araneidae. The spider's behavior is quite calm and almost motionless in her hermitage. She has a pentagonal abdomen with hairs like mold. She guards the eggs on her side from predators. Those eggs are in a skein of golden yellow silk.

This little guy is hanging from a small web attached to a grass stem. It’s a young male St. Andrew’s cross spider (Argiope sp.), a species of orb-weaver spider in the family Araneidae. That’s awesome! The little guy is beginning to live on his own by building his own web after separating from his mother.
