Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros)

I noticed the beetle one morning in my yard. It was not difficult for me to recognize that it was the coconut rhinoceros beetle, sometimes called the oil palm rhinoceros beetle. Oryctes rhinoceros—the scientific name—is a large beetle species belonging to the rhinoceros beetle subfamily Dynastinae. The beetle is black, partly shiny brown, with copper-red hairs at the base of the horn and on the sides of the shield.

They are nocturnal, active at night, and their attraction to light is strong. The beetle's habitat is commonly found in tropical forests, coconut plantations, or oil palm plantations.
