An Eternal Alliance

There is always something interesting in the world of insects. The most interesting thing to observe is how mutualism relationships work, and it happens in different species and even orders. We can imagine a peaceful world without conflict, as is often presented in animated movies about the friendships of animals.

I recently captured a beautiful moment of how a treehopper mimics thorns (Leptocentrus taurus) and establishes a mutual relationship with carpenter ants. Anyone who first witnessed this event would probably assume that the ants were intimidating the treehopper. Even I thought so at first. What happened was not what I thought.

As you often notice, there is a mutual relationship between a buffalo and a starling. The treehopper mimics thorns alongside the carpenter ants. That's an eternal alliance.

Wereng pohon meniru duri bersama semut tukang kayu. Itu sebuah aliansi abadi.

As the saying goes, "Where there is sugar, there are ants." The treehopper always releases sweet dew through its abdomen to feed the ants. So you will often see that there is no treehopper without the presence of ants around...and the ants offer something that cannot be refused: an exclusive guard to keep the treehopper safe from any predators!
