What is Yuka?
Yuka is an app that evaluates the quality and safety of food and cosmetic products by scanning their ingredients.

Simply scan a product’s barcode, and Yuka will analyze its ingredients and provide a score and color-coded rating based on its impact on your health. The app also suggests alternatives, making it a helpful guide for making healthier and more informed choices.
How I Discovered Yuka
Even it launched in 2017, I've never heard about Yuka. I first heard about Yuka recently through a video by Noriko, a Japanese Pilates YouTuber living in Barcelona. In the collaboration video, Noriko’s friend Miho mentioned using Yuka, and it instantly piqued my interest. Yuka is featured in Miho’s segment about halfway through the video. My Scanning Adventure
I immediately downloaded Yuka and started scanning various products around the house. It turned out to be a lot of fun… so much so that when my family got home, we all ended up having a scanning party together 😁
I try to buy organic products, so I was relieved to see them receiving Good to Excellent ratings. On the other hand, a cheap hand cream I bought on a whim unsurprisingly received a low score. Definitely a reminder to be more mindful with my purchases. Good learning.
I was also quite shocked and disappointed to find out that the Essie nail polish I’ve loved since my days in Tokyo scored poorly. Hazardous ingredients ... !? Since it was a relatively expensive purchase, I’ll use what I have more modestly, but next time, I’ll look for a higher-quality nail polish 😢 Or nail polish in general not good? Let's see.
A Few Quirks I Noticed
That said, I did notice that Yuka isn’t perfect. For instance, when I scanned refined canola oil, it predictably received a low rating (right in the photo below). However, I was puzzled to see that some of the recommended alternatives were also refined oil (left in the photo below). This felt a bit off to me.
Conclusion
My first impression of Yuka is that it’s a fun and helpful guide to review products at home or at shopping. However, as with the canola oil example, having a basic understanding of nutrition and chemical components is still essential.
I’m planning to continue using Yuka and will share my thoughts again in about a month 😊

Yukaとの出会い
私がYukaに興味を持ったきっかけは、バルセロナ在住のピラティスYouTuberのNorikoさんの動画です。Norikoさんのお友達のみほさんがコラボ動画の中でYukaを使っていると話していて、ぜひ試してみたいと思いました。動画の中盤くらい、みほさんのパートでYukaが紹介されています。
いろいろスキャンしてみた
さっそくYukaをインストールして、いろいろな製品をスキャンしてみました。これが楽しい・・・！家族が帰ってくると、みんなでスキャン大会になりました。
私が普段購入する商品はオーガニックのものが多く、GoodからExcellentの評価を受けていて安心しました。当座しのぎで買った安いハンドクリームのスコアが低かったのは案の定でした。こうした買い物は減らした方がよいですね。
また、東京に住んでいた頃から大好きで使っていたEssieのネイルカラーが非常に低いスコアだったことに驚き、悲しくなりました。Hazardousって・・・！比較的高価な買い物だったので、今持っているものは大切にかつ控えめに使いつつ、ネイルカラーを買い足すときに品質の良いものを探そうと思います 😢
違和感を感じたところ
ただし、Yukaにも完璧ではない部分があると感じました。例えば、精製された菜種油をスキャンしたところ、予想通り評価はよくありませんでした。でも、代替として勧められた商品も精製油のようで、これには少し違和感を覚えました。
おわりに
Yukaの第一印象は「ガイドとして優秀で楽しい」というものでした。お店で買い物をする際にとても便利に使えると思います。一方で、精製油の件のように、栄養や化学成分の基本的な知識は必要だと感じました。
しばらく使い続けて、1か月後などにまた使用感をシェアしたいです 😊
