Visiting Botanical Garden Plant Market & Königliche Gartenakademie in Berlin

I'm visiting the spring plant market at the Berlin Botanical Garden. I came here nine years ago when I lived in Berlin, and I’d been meaning to return ever since. This was supposed to be a two-night solo trip, but somehow the whole family ended up joining me. I made sure to defend my solo time on the middle day for the market and the Königliche Gartenakademie though 😉

Both the Botanical Garden and the Gartenakademie were such beautiful, inspiring places—I’d love to share a glimpse of them here on Hive Garden.

I noticed the long line stretching far from the ticket counter—so long you’d never guess it was for a plant market. But the promise of all the plants waiting inside made the wait more than worthwhile. I queued up with a peaceful heart　☺️

Just after entering, I came across a stand selling plants that thrive near the sea. Right up my alley! I ended up chatting with the vendor for a while. I told them I’d be back later—carrying plants around too early would’ve been tricky—and on my way out, I returned to pick up three pots: oyster plant, sea fennel, and sea asparagus. A banner in front of the stand caught my eye: “Many of today’s cultivated vegetables trace their wild origins back to the coast.” I loved that, and snapped a photo. I’ll be growing (and eating) these carefully — more updates soon!

There were over 130 stands at the market—not just plants and trees, but gardening tools, educational booths, and more. Everything was tempting. I had to pass on the tomato seedlings (I wasn’t sure I could get them back to Leipzig safely), but I did linger longingly. Surely there will be some exciting finds at my local plant markets, too. That said, Berlin’s scale—the sheer number of stands and plants—is something to envy. I’m already thinking of coming back in the fall.

In Germany, tree nurseries are called Baumschule, which means "tree school" — a name I absolutely love. Several nurseries specialized for trees were at the market, and one of them had younger trees, all priced at €12.50. I’ve been wanting a Japanese maple, and there it was, I can bring one back! A native variety from Japan, and the vendor assured me it could handle German winters outdoors. I decided on the spot. This year, since I’ve started renting a garden, I’m thinking of scaling back the balcony pots and turning it into more of a relaxing café-like space.

After exploring just one side of the market, I exited the garden and walked to the Königliche Gartenakademie. Despite the name, it’s not an academy in the traditional sense — since its revival in 2008, it functions as a shop, gardening school, and café. One of my favorite design stores, Manufactum, also has a branch there, which was all the more reason to go.

They had an incredible selection of plants here, too. I was particularly taken by the small apple trees. Since we already have one apple tree at home, I started imagining a little peach tree to go with it—though I didn’t see any this time. Something to look for online later!

The entrance to the Gartenakademie is quite modest, but inside it just keeps opening up. After browsing the outdoor nursery, I moved into a section full of beautiful gardening tools—each one more tempting than the last.

I bought a pair of small, pretty pruning shears—perfect for keeping at home, and maybe even for summer berry-picking trips.

While admiring all the beautifully crafted tools, I reached the Manufactum section—always a highlight. I wandered through, daydreaming about one day seeing my homemade shiso syrup stocked on those shelves.

Past the shop, I found a small seed cabin. I picked up seeds for watercress, winter cress, squash from Arche Noah (a seed-saving organization in Austria I’ve recently started supporting), and summer purslane. Ah so many nice things ... I need infinite budget, space, time and hands 😁

Having been completely absorbed and skipping lunch, I finally turned back to the plant market, took a look at the other side that I hadn't seen and took a break on the lawn. It was still jacket weather, and the sky turned cloudy later in the afternoon, but the overall mood was soft and peaceful—everything you’d hope for on a spring day.

On the way back, I switched between bus and U-Bahn, carefully protecting my new plants as I moved through Berlin’s bustling crowds. I was so relieved when I made it back to the hotel safely. Still buzzing with excitement, I sat down to write this post while the memories were fresh.

This spring weekend—returning to the Berlin Botanical Garden's plant market after nine years, and visiting the Königliche Gartenakademie for the first time—was deeply satisfying. My gardening motivation has shot through the roof. I’m more determined than ever to make both the new garden and our balcony into welcoming, cozy spaces—for both plants and people.

ベルリンの植物園の春の植物市を見に来ています。9年前にベルリンに住んでいた時に訪れて、また来たい来たいと思っていて、ようやく来ることができました。2泊3日の一人旅のはずがなぜか家族もついてくることになり・・・植物市と王立庭園アカデミーのお店を見に行く中日はひとり時間を死守しました 😉

少しゆっくり目についたら、チケット売り場から続く植物市とは思えないほどの長蛇の列。でも、これからたくさん植物を見て回れると思うと並ぶのもなんのその。穏やかな気持ちで並んで待ちました。

入場してすぐのところに海に近いところで育つ植物を扱っているスタンドがあってどんぴしゃで、しばしお店の人と立ち話をしました。持ち歩くのは大変なので、また来ることを伝えて、帰りがけにオイスタープラント、海ウイキョウ、アッケシソウ（厚岸草）の3鉢を購入しました。お店の前に「今栽培されている野菜多くは、野生の起源を海辺に持っている。」というバナーがあって、写真を撮らせてもらいました。おもしろい！大事に育てつつどんどん食べて、また感想を書きますね。

樹木や植物を売るスタンドを中心に、ガーデニング用品を売るスタンド、情報提供をするスタンドなどさまざまな130を超えるスタンドがあって、どれもこれも目移りしてしまいます。さすがにトマトの小さな苗を安全にライプツィヒまで持って帰る自信はなく、大好きなトマトはおいしいんだろうなあと見るだけで泣く泣く諦めました。きっと住んでいる町の植物市にもおもしろいのが並ぶはず。でもベルリンはドイツの首都だけあって、植物市のスタンドの数も植物の数も圧倒的なのはうらやましかったです。秋も来ようっと。

ドイツでは樹木を育てているナーサリーを「Baumschule」（木の学校）と言って、私はこの名前が大好きです。植物市にはもちろんたくさんのBaumschuleも参加していて、そのうちの一つで若めの木を扱っているスタンドがありました。すべて12.5ユーロとのことでお値段も手頃。ずっとほしかったもみじがあったらバルコニー用に持って帰りたい・・・と思ったらあるんですよね。日本原産の種類で、ドイツでも冬外に出しておいて大丈夫と教えてもらい、即決しました ☺️ 今年は庭を借りたので、バルコニーは少し鉢の数を減らしてリラックスできるカフェスペースのようにしようかなと考えているのです。

植物市を片側だけ見て、一度植物園を抜けて、王立庭園アカデミーに向かいました。王立庭園アカデミーという名前ではあるものの、2008年に再興されて、植物の販売やガーデンスクール、カフェといったサービスを提供しています。大好きなデザインショップManufactumの支店も入っているのでうきうき足を伸ばしました。

ここにも素敵な植物が山のように並んでいて、中でも目を引いたのが小さめのりんごの木でした。りんごは庭に植っているので、小さなももの木などがあったらいいなと思ったものの、それはなさそうで、帰宅したらオンラインで探そうと思います。

王立庭園アカデミーは入り口は小さいものの、どんどん中に入っていけます。外のナーサリーの次はガーデニング用品が並ぶコーナーへ。どれもこれもほしい・・・

今まで使っていた枝切り鋏は庭に置いておけると便利なので、家用に小さなかわいい枝切り鋏を買いました。毎年夏に恒例のベリーハントにも持って行けそうです。

ていねいに作られた製品を眺めてうっとりしながら歩いていると、大好きなManufactumのエリアに到着しました。ここに将来、私が作っている紫蘇シロップが並んだらいいなあ・・・なんて妄想しながら素敵な製品の数々を見てまわりました。

ショップエリアを抜けて、種を売っている小屋があって、クレソンやクレソンと似たオランダガラシ、このところ寄付をし始めたオーストリアのArche Noahという団体のかぼちゃと夏のスベリヒユの種を購入しました。ああもう止まらない・・・！

休むのも忘れて植物に見入っていたので、植物市に戻って原っぱで休憩しました。ジャケットは必要で、午後からは曇ってきましたが、思っていたよりは暖かくて、平和な春の日そのものでした。

帰りはバスと地下鉄を乗り継いでホテルへ。さすが首都ベルリン、人が多くて、植物をガードしながらそろそろと移動しました。無事ホテルに着いてほっと一息。興奮が冷めやらぬうちにこの投稿を書き始めたのでした。

9年ぶりのベルリンの植物園の植物市と、初めて訪れた王立庭園アカデミーに大満足の春の週末です。ガーデニングのモチベーションが爆上がり。バルコニーも新しく借りた庭も少しずつ手入れをして、植物にも人間にも居心地の良い場所にしたいと改めて思うのでした。
