Supporting by Making as a Maker #01 - Cherry Pit Warmup Pillow /

avatar

In the second half of this month, I’m planning to start a small series called “Supporting through Making.” I’ll be posting about things I make in my daily life in the DIYHub, and donating the HBD rewards from these posts to a makerspace in Ukraine.

Last year, I participated in a maker residency organized by Makers United in Chemnitz, Germany. Olha, who is involved in running the makerspace Hacklab in Kyiv Ukraine was in the program too. This week, Olha posted in the residency participants’ WhatsApp group that, amid ongoing power shortages, their electricity generator had broken down and they were seeking donations to purchase a new one.

Thanks to the strength of the maker community, it looks like the necessary funds will be raised for now. However, to be better prepared for similar situations in the future, they are planning to set up ongoing crowdfunding. I was wondering how can I support them and I decided that this month I would write on Hive Blog about the things I make every day and donate the HBD rewards from these posts to Hacklab. This is my “Supporting through Making” series.

The first post in this series is about a warming pillow filled with cherry pits (Kirschkernkissen), which I tried making yesterday. I read about this recently in an essay and I immediately thought I’d love to have one too. I found that it’s called a Körnerkissen (seed pillow) and is commonly used in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Wikipedia introduces some fascinating anecdotes, such as: “Women employed at Swiss cherry liqueur factories discovered that cherry pits were suitable for heat pads and began using the leftover pits from liqueur production…” and “There is evidence that cherry pit pillows were already in use in the Middle Ages.”

I actually received one of Kirschkernkissen from a midwife when my daughter was a baby. We later passed it on as my daughter grew older, so I started looking for something similar that I could place on my shoulders or eyes. I couldn’t find one in shops, and while searching online, I suddenly realized: I could just buy the pits and make one myself! If it turned out well, I could make a few more to give to friends; if not, I could scatter the pits in the garden as food for birds that love cherry pits, or simply add them to the compost.

So I ordered organic cherry pits for me (and for my garden in case), and the other day a small, cute 2 kg bag arrived. This is what the cherry pits look like.

I decided to make it long enough to put from one shoulder to the other, passing behind the neck. One of the nice things about making it yourself is being able to freely choose the shape.

To prevent the pits from gathering in one place, I divided the pillow into three sections. I made it by sewing a long pouch (30 cm × 15 cm), leaving one short side open, adding 100 g of pits, closing it, then adding another 100 g, and so on. If you’re used to sewing, it takes less than an hour to make.

After warming it in a 300W microwave for two minutes and placing it on my shoulders, a gentle warmth slowly spreads—it feels wonderful. Apparently, it can also be warmed in an oven, so I’m thinking of putting it into the oven after baking bread, once it has cooled a bit.

When I put it on my family’s shoulders, everyone said it felt great and started competing for it. Moments like this really make making things worthwhile. I might make a few more ☺️

That’s the first post in my “Supporting by Making as a Maker” series. If you’d like to support my idea, I’d really appreciate your upvotes 🙏

The heat doesn't last so long but the gentle warmth is wow! 😉

Great project.

I have a couple of theses heat pads, they're great for minor aches and pains or just to keep warm. I never knew what's inside (they're like beans) and have a lovely lavender scent when heated up.

It can be beans too. I think some pillow had Adzuki beans in Japan ... not sure as it was in my childhood. Lavender scent sounds great! I must research this direction 👏

This is such a lovely idea! Cherry pits aren’t really common here where I live since cherries are usually imported, but it makes me appreciate this even more. Truly special and thoughtful making

Seems there are other options as the title of the wikipedia page is "Körnerkissen" (seed pillow or core pillow). It was fun to make it and I had an idea to make embroidery on the cover ☺️

Thanks I will try to look for it. It will be very helpful especially here in our city where it's always cold

This is a really thoughtful project with real impact. Tying your craft to support for a Ukrainian makerspace gives this series a strong purpose. Well done.
