Supporting by Making #03 - Basic Kids' Skirt / ベーシックな子供のスカート
The other day, I sewed clothes for my child for the first time in a long while. The reason was simple: no matter where we looked, we couldn’t find a perfect one.
My partner is very good at bargain hunting, so we went shopping together as a family over the weekend with some expectations. But what we found were skirts that made me think, “Isn’t this cold?” “Is this a party costume?” “This will tear in one day…”
What I really want is a basic, warm, and sturdy skirt that can keep up with everyday life. When my daughter was younger, I often bought clothes from organic lines at a drugstore, dm — the quality and price were great. But now there are no more sizes, and I’m wondering where to buy good children’s clothes.
Organic fashion brands often offer nice designs, good quality, and fewer worries about child labor. But when you consider that children might only wear something for one or two years — and it could get a hole the very next day — unfortunately it's too expensive for us.
Luckily, sewing has been a long-time hobby of mine, and it’s also a time I truly enjoy. So I went to a fabric store and bought some stretch corduroy, and sewed the skirt you see in the photo on top.
If you skip pockets, the process is quite simple. Even with the pockets, it's not difficult at all. First I sewed the two short sides of a rectangular piece of fabric together. With thin fabric, I gather it finely and attach a waistband; with thicker fabric like this, I make tucks instead. Then I inserted elastic into the waistband and hem the bottom — and it’s done!
For my daughter’s size (134), using standard wide European fabric, about 50 cm is enough, so the fabric cost is quite reasonable. Once you’re used to it, it takes about 2–3 hours to make. I’m sharing a rough sketch below.
My daughter has worn it to school yesterday and today, so I guess she likes it. At this age, I thought I would hear, “I don’t want to wear mama clothes,” so this made me really happy.
The cutting is simple, and most of the sewing is straight lines. Even beginners should be able to finish it within half a day with help. That made me think: maybe a workshop for parents who wonder what to do about kids' clothes, or for kids who want to try sewing their own clothes could be nice.

先日久しぶりに子供の洋服を縫いました。というのも、どこを見に行っても、これだ！というスカートがなかったからです。パートナーがバーゲンハントが得意なので、期待して家族で週末に買い物に出かけたものの、「え、これは寒くないのか！？」「パーティーのコスチューム！？」「一発で穴開くだろうな・・・」といったスカートしか見当たりませんでした。
ベーシックで暖かくて子供が日々きてもついてくるようなタフなスカートがほしいのです。日本でいうとユニクロやMUJIに売っている感じでしょうか。小さい頃はドラッグストアのオーガニックのラインが質も値段もとてもよくて、よく買っていたのですが、もうサイズがなく、どこで買ったものか試行錯誤の日々です。
オーガニックファッションのお店なら、見た目も質にも満足できて、児童労働の心配の少ないものがあるのかなと思うものの、1-2年しか履かない、さらに翌日穴の開く可能性もある・・・となると、高いなあと思ってしまうんですよね 💦
幸い洋裁は私の長年の趣味で、私の楽しい時間にもなるので、生地屋さんでストレッチが入っているコーデュロイの生地を買ってきて冒頭の写真のスカートを縫いました。ポケットを省くと作り方はより簡単で、四角い布の両端を縫い合わせて、薄い生地であれば細かいギャザーを寄せつつベルトをつけて、今回のように厚手の生地であればタックを寄せてベルトをつけて、いずれの場合も最後にゴムを入れて裾を上げて出来上がり。うちの子の大きさでヨーロッパの幅広の生地だと50cmもあればできるので生地代もお手頃です。製作にかかる時間も慣れたら2−3時間。ざっくりした裁断方法のメモをのせておきます。
昨日今日と学校に着て行っているので、気に入ってくれたかな。今の年くらいになったらもう「母さんが作った服なんて」と言い出すかなと思っていたのでなんだかうれしいです。
裁断はシンプルで、ほとんどが直線縫いで、洋裁初心者の人でも半日では完成させられると思うので、子供の洋服どうしたもんだろうと思っている保護者向け、自分の洋服を自分で縫ってみたいと思っている子供向けのワークショップなんてどうだろうと地域の女性メイカーのWhatsAppグループに投稿してみました ☺️
