This is my first garden journal of 2026! I'm happy to be back for the weekly Garden Journal ☺️
This year, Germany has been quite cold, and I honestly struggled to feel motivated about gardening for a while. But at the beginning of the year, I had a reunion with a market friend who also loves beans, and little by little, my gardening motivation has started to come back. I was so happy to see my fellow bean lover again that I ordered bean seeds (or should I say beans…?) from Beany Things in Spain, who are working on preserving bean varieties. They arrived this week. Ah, yes, they’re so beautiful!

Last year, I was lucky enough to host a workshop where we made bean necklaces. After that, someone who saw the workshop even reached out to ask if I’d like to do another one. For a long time, I had been making bean necklaces on my own, focusing on exhibiting and selling them. But making them together in a workshop turned out to be a wonderful discovery—it sparked new ideas and became a great opportunity to share the beauty and deliciousness of beans with others.

I eat beans regularly in my daily life, and this month, with Veganuary, I’ve been eating even more beans than usual. I really do love them.
So, as I every year, I’ve started thinking about my “gardening theme for 2026,” and I’m considering setting it “beans.” How wonderful would it be to make necklaces with beans harvested from my own garden 🫘
As for plants… I left my yuzu tree outside, trusting its cold tolerance a bit too much, and it ended up struggling due to lack of water and the cold. In almost the same conditions, my kumquat—which is said to be less cold-hardy than yuzu—looks fine. What went wrong? Perhaps the yuzu was placed further inside and dried out more easily? In any case, I’ve moved it to the entrance to recover, and all I can do now is hope it will sprout again in spring.

Now that my gardening motivation is back, this week I start thinking about what else to plant this spring and summer, with beans at the center. And next month is already waiting for me—with sowing broad beans and chili peppers just around the corner.

2026年最初のガーデンジャーナルです。
今年のドイツは冷え込んで、なかなかガーデニングのモチベーションが上がらない感じだったのですが、年初に豆が大好きなマーケット仲間と再開して、徐々にガーデニングのモチベーションが上がってきました。豆仲間と再会したのがうれしくて、スペインで豆の種の保全に取り組んでいるBeany Thingsさんから豆の種(というのか、豆というのか・・・)を注文して、今週届きました。ああ、きれい!

去年は年末に豆のネックレスを作るワークショップをする機会に恵まれ、それを見た人からまたワークショップをしたいとオファーがあったこともありました。豆のネックレスは長らく一人で作って展示や販売する方向性で動いていましたが、ワークショップでみんなで作ると新しいアイディアに出会えて、豆の美しさやおいしさを知ってもらういい機会になるんだなと良い発見になりました。

私自身普段から豆を食べ、今月はヴィーガニュアリーでさらにもりもり豆を食べ豆が大好きです。
そんなこんなで毎年なんとなく決めている、「今年のガーデニングのテーマ」は「豆」にしようかなと思っています。自分の庭でとれた豆でネックレスを作れたら最高ですよね!
豆のほかはというと・・・耐寒性があるからと柚子の木を油断して外に置いておいたら、水不足と寒さで元気がありません。ほぼ同じ状況で、耐寒性が柚子よりも低いとされる金柑は元気で、何がいけなかったのだろう。柚子は金柑よりも奥にあって、より乾燥してしまっていたのかな。何はともあれ、玄関で養生させて、春にまた芽吹いてくれることを願うばかりです。

ガーデニングのモチベーションが上がってきたので、今週は、今年の春夏に豆を中心に他に何を植えるか考え始めたいと思います。そしてもう来月はそら豆や唐辛子類の種まきが待っています。

I remember the cold, cold winter I spent in Berlin a long time ago. 🥶
One of my students gave me two bags of kumquats from her garden last week. I juiced them with a lemon to make a powerful pick-me-up drink! Last month she gave me a bag of kabosu, which I also put through the juicer! What do you do with kumquats?

Hi Hiro, nice to hear from you! In Germany, I think people eat kumquats just as it is with the skin. I did the same in Fukui prefecture in Japan :) By the way, you have a really good student 👍
We preserve kumquats with salt for the longer the better ie at least a year. Then we add hot water and squash them to make a drink which is great for sore throat
Wow sounds great! If my tree bears fruits this year, I must try ... or I just simply buy and try it ☺️
I can't wait to start growing again, but I do enjoy the little break where I don't have to worry about my garden
