Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025.09.21 /
Today might have been the last day of summer in Germany. Next week the temperature will drop to below 20 °C. I enjoyed the autumn plant market at the botanical garden with my child and brought home some new indoor friends for the autumn–winter season. This time my daughter actually bought more than I did, which made me very happy as a plant-loving mama ☺️
Micro Balcony and Indoor Plants
Many of the spring and summer plants on the balcony are still lush and green, but the color of the sunlight already feels like autumn and makes me a little sentimental. It will get colder next week, so I hope the sunflowers that are about to bloom can still manage to open their flowers.
Here are the plants I bought today for autumn and winter. There was a stand full of Hoyas — a plant whose uniquely shaped flowers I love — and I couldn’t resist taking one home. I used to have a Hoya before but couldn’t bring it with me when we moved from southern to northern Germany, so this feels like a happy reunion.
My daughter first chose a carnivorous plant (it's her tradition to buy one at the plant market), as always, and then fell in love with a soft-spined cactus. Unable to decide, she negotiated me for two — something she rarely do — so I agreed. The total was 15 EUR. I was told that during winter the larger cactus needs watering only twice and the smaller one none at all. Let’s see if they can survive the season … she is my daughter 💪
The “Klein” but Big Garden
During last week’s community workday we cleared away old branches, and this week I took photos to show the before/after. The right side in front of the shed is now neat and open, which makes me think I could grow something there next year — maybe even build a small greenhouse.
As for garden work, I’m harvesting the last of the summer vegetables and herbs and tidying up the beds that served us this season.
While cleaning the shed, I also started enjoying outdoor cooking again. Warm food feels wonderful in the cooler air — and honestly, having fewer insects around is a relief 😅
Next week I’ll be traveling to the U.S., so I hope to visit the garden once more before departure.
When I return, I plan to buy bulbs for next spring and plant leafy greens for the autumn–winter season.
To-Do for Next Week
Next week, due to my travel, so gardening will slow down a bit. Today I taught my daughter how to water the plants while I’m away and gave her pocket money. I hope to return and report in my next garden journal that everything stayed healthy!
Happy Gardening, and have a nice Sunday evening everyone.
"Klein"
Happy Gardening!
Yes, your right cactus can’t water it all the time because it doesn’t like being wet, if it’s always wet it can die. It’s really cute and it’s expensive here, I’m thinking of buying one. But I’m worried my niece might play with it.
It was interesting to get to know about the cactus watering. Luckily plants are affordable here in Germany, a gardening nation, so I can experiment with my daughter. I'm sure your niece will be a good friend of your plant ☺️
I really want to buy a cactus. I saw a lot of vlogs and I’m happy about it. I used to have one before but my son kept watering it and it died...
I see ... this can be a threat 💦 I didn't think about over watering. I wish you a good luck @jazlove!
It's wonderful that your daughter shares your love for plants. Your autumn plant sounds perfect for this season. Can't wait to see your greenhouse in the future.
I try my best for the green house. It's one of my dreams to have one for quite long time 😊
