Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025.09.07 / 大小庭の記録

Here in eastern Germany where I live, the days are pleasantly mild with highs between 20 and 25°C, blue skies, and a bit of chill in the mornings and evenings. It’s such a nice season, but I can’t help feeling a little sentimental, thinking that this year's gardening season is slowly coming to an end.

So, here’s this week’s update from the micro balcony and the garden!

Micro Balcony Update

On the balcony, the late-season strawberries have started to ripen, and I’m picking little red fruits. Last year, they kept producing until December—let’s see how long they’ll last this time.

Speaking of strawberries: the other day, when I looked out from the kitchen window, I noticed some runners stretching down toward the balcony below! I quickly pulled it back up and tucked it into a pot. Strawberries may look cute and gentle, but they spread quite vigorously. If you leave a runner in soil for a while, it will grow roots and become a new plant. Until last year I had no space to plant them, but now with a garden, I can plant as many as I like 😁

The citrus trees are also doing well. The yuzu fruit is slowly swelling, and my kumquat, which suddenly bloomed profusely the other day, seems to be forming fruits too—the spots where the flowers fell now show tiny round bulges. The lemon tree, which has been with us for seven years, struggled after winter, so it seems to be taking a break this year. I’ll keep caring for it patiently.

Although the balcony is slowly quieting down, once the season settles, I’m planning to move the berries and some other plants to the garden and turn the balcony into more of a relaxing space.

The “Klein” but Big Garden

In the garden, harvesting continues, but the focus is gradually shifting to maintenance. I recently contacted a tree specialist (Baumpfleger) for advice on pruning and caring for diseased trees. Here’s a panorama photo I took for reference: from the left, the tall lilac, plum, and cherry trees are casting too much shade and making harvests difficult, while the apple tree on the far right seems to be diseased, so I’d like to have it checked.

I’ve also finally started cleaning out the old garden shed. There seem to be quite a few spiders, so first I’m gently asking them to move out. I don’t like using chemicals, so I’ve been brushing away webs and bought some peppermint essential oil spray, which is said to work as a repellent.

Now that it’s cooling down, I’d also like to get back into outdoor cooking—soups and bread, rice balls and miso soup, hot sandwiches, and so on, enjoyed in between shed-cleaning sessions. I’m even considering creating a small grill spot that’s easier to use than pulling out the full barbecue each time.

To-Do for Next Week

I’ll continue with the shed cleaning, and since late September to mid-October will be busy with trips to the U.S. and India, plus Hive Fest, I’d like to buy bulbs early this year before things get too hectic.

私が住んでいるドイツ東部では、最高気温が20度から25度くらいで、晴れ空、朝晩はちょっと冷えるかなという過ごしやすい日々が続いています。いい季節ですが、ああもうすぐガーデニングシーズンも終わりなのかなと思うとちょっとしんみり。

それでは今週のマイクロバルコニーと庭の様子をどうぞ！

マイクロバルコニーの様子

バルコニーでは晩生のいちごが実をつけ始めて、日々ころころといちごをもらっています。去年は12月まで実をつけていたいちご、今年はいつまで実をつけているでしょう。

いちごといえば、先日、キッチンから窓越しにバルコニーを眺めたら、いちごのランナーが下の階のバルコニーに届きそうになっていて、あわてて引き上げて、ポットにさしました。いちごってかわいらしいイメージがありますが、結構な勢いで増えます。ポットにさしたランナーはしばらく置いておくと、根が伸びて新しい苗ができます。去年までは苗を作っても植える場所がありませんでしたが、今年は庭があるので植え放題です😁

バルコニーでは柑橘さんたちも元気です。ゆずは徐々に実を大きくしていて、先日突然花をたくさん咲かせた金柑にも実がつくのかな、花が落ちたところに実のような膨らみが見えます。レモンは冬越しで元気がなかったのでお休みかな、7年ほどうちにいる木で、大事にしようと思います。

静かになりつつあるバルコニーですが、もう少し季節が落ち着いたらベリー類などは庭に移して、バルコニーでくつろげるスペースを作ろうと思っています。

"Klein"だけれど大きい庭の様子

庭では収穫を楽しみつつ、作業はメンテナンスに移行しつつあります。庭の木の剪定と、病気の木の手入れについてアドバイスをもらいたくて、果樹の専門家（Baumpfleger）に連絡をとりました。そのときに撮ったパノラマ写真があるので載せておきます。左から3本、ライラック、西洋スモモ、さくらんぼの木の背が高すぎて影を作ってしまうのと収穫ができないのを改善したくて、一番右のりんごの木が病気なので診てもらいたいと思っています。

もうひとつ、ようやく古屋の掃除を始めました。くもが結構いるようで、まずは彼らにどいてもらうところから。薬剤で追い出すのはあまり好きではないので、地道に蜘蛛の巣を退けて、ミントのエッセンシャルオイルのスプレーが効くようなのでオイルを買ってきました。

涼しくなってきたので、アウトドアクッキングも再開したいです。スープとパン、おにぎりと味噌汁、ホットサンドイッチなどなど、小屋掃除の合間に楽しみたいです。いちいちバーベキューグリルを出してこなくてもささっと焼けるグリルスペースも作りたいなとも思っています。

来週のTODO

小屋掃除を続けて、今年は9月末から10月半ばにかけてアメリカやインド行き、Hive Festもあってばたばたするので早めに球根を買っておきたいなとも思っています。
