This week marked the start of July, and temperatures soared up to 36°C here. It was the hottest day so far this year, with some parts of Germany reportedly hitting 40°C. One of the Brussels sprouts I planted in spring dried up from the heat, and I myself nearly fainted during a restaurant outing with a friend. It's a good reminder to stay cautious in extreme weather 😅

Now, here’s a look at this week’s micro balcony and garden updates!

Micro Balcony Update

It’s been two weeks since I came back home, and I’ve been watering the plants thoroughly and resowing seeds. Little by little, the balcony plants are coming back to life. One last yuzu fruit that I thought might fall off due to its discolored calyx is still clinging to the tree and growing steadily — this makes me so happy.

Speaking of fruit trees, the Hive Fig Family that survived is doing well and looking more and more like real trees. With rising air and soil temperatures, tiny new shoots have started to appear. Who knows — maybe I’m becoming a Hive fig farmer?? 😁

The tomatoes have started to show a hint of orange but are not quite ready for harvest. Maybe they’re waiting for my daughter is back, who loves tomatoes just as much as I do, to come back home.

Speaking of tomatoes — I love them so much that I even hung a tomato poster in my room. I’m currently reorganizing my workspace, and the first thing that came to mind when thinking about decor was ... tomatoes 🍅

This week, I rescued two plants. "Rescuing" means picking up weak or unsold plants from stores at a discount — it’s a kind of habit I have, and I think it's good for plants, shops, and myself. One was a short-stemmed baby’s breath, and the other a set of savoy cabbage seedlings.

Baby’s breath was my mother’s favorite flower — she used to have it with roses or dry it. I’ve never grown it before, but I decided to give it a try so I can make little bouquets someday. It’s also my first time growing savoy cabbage. Since it takes up a some space, I’ve always just bought grown up ones for cooking, but now that I have a garden, I can finally grow it myself ☺️ I’m going to plant it in the garden later.

There’s a lot more going on, but I’ll stop here for now. Every morning, I enjoy watering the plants around 5 a.m. while sipping coffee. I’m so glad we have this micro balcony.

The “Klein” but Big Garden

It was a hot week, and with my family away, I started going to the garden early in the morning. As a result, I got bitten by mosquitoes on my forehead, neck, and elbows... so itchy — and it looks funny too. I found out that mosquitoes are active in the early morning, so I’ll avoid going that early from now on. I don’t like using mosquito prevention spray around my face, so I’m going to try using an organic roll-on around my neck and see how it goes.

The broad beans I planted first when I got the garden are now fully harvested. I enjoyed them in quiche and pasta — so satisfying! I’d love to plant lots more again next year.

I wrote a separate post about the broad beans, so feel free to check it out!

With summer vegetables also growing fast, so are the weeds — which is why I tried using cardboard mulch, often seen in no-dig gardening. Ideally, you’d lay down the cardboard before planting, but since it’s my first year, I’m doing it a bit late. I plan to add more cardboard and fill in the gaps with straw.

Each time I visit the garden, the apples are a little bigger. I can’t wait to harvest them — I’m already dreaming of homemade apple pie!

To-Do for Next Week

Next week is expected to bring some rain and cooler temperatures, so hopefully the plants will get a nice break too.

Now that I’ve experienced spring in this garden, I’m beginning to get a sense of how to use the space more effectively. The plants are mostly doing their own thing, so I’ll work on expanding the growing areas while keeping an eye on the weather.

That’s it for this week. I’m so happy the balcony is slowly coming back to life.

Wishing you all a wonderful Sunday! I’m off to have breakfast and head to the garden ☺️

Happy gardening and have a nice summer Sunday, everyone!

"Klein"

Reading your story felt like a gentle walk through your garden and balcony, full of quiet joy and care. Your love for every leaf, fruit, and rescued plant truly shines, and it warms my heart to see how deeply connected you are to the rhythms of nature.

I especially loved the moment with the yuzu fruit still hanging on — such a simple but powerful reminder of resilience. And your story about baby’s breath and your mother was so touching; what a lovely way to keep her memory blooming. Despite the heat and the mosquito battles, you still manage to find peace in those early mornings and small victories, like new fig shoots or tomato blushes.

Thank you for sharing not just what you grow, but also the meaning and memories behind it all. Wishing you cooler days, a fruitful garden, and lots of calm, coffee-scented mornings ahead. 💚🍃

"Rescuing" sad plants—what a delicate tenderness!
It had never occurred to me. How much love is in that? I can feel it from the other side of the world.
That gesture has taught me so much, like a silent caress when you least expect it. I've learned from you in the kindest way, and thank you for this new perspective.

I also use the same technique a lot with cardboard for mulch; it's effective, extremely fast, and degrades well over time. Your entire garden is beautiful, and what lovely tomatoes! Thanks for sharing. I hope you have a wonderful week! 🍺🍺

I can do rescuing because it also helps me to save budget 😉 And a nice chance to get to know plants I've never had in my life. Mostly they recover like my sage or parsley on the balcony.

It's my first time to use cardboard box in this amount. I look forward to see how it works. Thank you for sharing your experience. I felt in a way relived to read especially it degrades well.

Have a nice week too!

Of course, in addition to saving, it serves to more easily recognize the needs of the plants. And a great satisfaction see them bigger. Love! Sage 💚

Very good as you did, put bricks on top of the cardboard, because the wind puts them to fly. And they will help you control the unwanted herbs.

Sometimes the presence of the uniform color in the grass is aesthetically very strong, or the size of the cardboard is very large, so to hide it, I threw it above pruning remains. Last year, I made small holes, and there I inserted the flooded seedlings. With very good results and very little effort.

Greetings and have a wonderful day.
