Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025 - 24 May / 大小庭の記録
It was comfortably warm in the first half of the week, but the latter half brought on-and-off rain and rather chilly days. Summer feels far away still, but I’m glad that most of the summer vegetables I planted earlier this month are growing well—except for the okra, which seems to be struggling.
Now, let’s begin this week’s Garden Journal ☺️
Micro Balcony Updates
On the balcony, strawberries are growing steadily and looking beautiful. The temperatures and sunshine still seem a bit lacking, so they’re not turning red just yet—but I can’t wait to harvest them.
Another seasonal delight is the Japan iris. In Japan, it’s known as the flower of Japanese Children’s Day on May 5, but in Germany, it blooms a bit later. Seeing their deep purple-blue color on the balcony brings a touch of Japan to our home. I planted many bulbs last year, so I’ve been able to enjoy them myself and even share some with friends.
Our yuzu tree, which spent the whole winter on the balcony, had a few minor issues like aphids on new growth but has now blossomed with three flowers. It might be the first year we get to harvest citrus grown at home—how exciting!
The five varieties of my daughter's balcony tomatoes are also growing well, each in their own pace.
A hidden star of this season is the potted onion plant I’m growing for the first time. Thanks to ChatGPT’s tip that the green tops of onions can be used just like scallions, I haven’t needed to buy green onions lately—there’s always enough for my daily needs such as garnishing miso soup ☺️
Speaking of scallions, I’m also growing perennial Welsh onions. I discovered them through Vera Greutink, a gardener I admire, and her video on perennials. I’ve grown them a few times now, and I have a feeling that with good care in the garden, I’ll never run out of green onions again—a dream for natto and miso soup lovers like me!
Now that I have the garden, I’m hoping to scale down the number of pots on the balcony and turn it into a space for coffee and wine. But as you can see... there’s still quite a lot! That’s gardening!
The “Klein” but Big Garden
With almost all the summer seedlings now planted, I’m experiencing a bit of post-planting gardening loss. Still, I go to the garden twice a week, doing some maintenance like weeding and taking joy in seeing small changes.
One recent happy discovery was that the fava beans have started forming pods! Since I was in Portugal in February and only signed the garden contract in March, it was a very late start. I was unsure how things would turn out in a brand-new space, but it looks like we’ll be harvesting some. I'm so excited as it's one of my favorite early summer vegetables that is not commonly available in Germany.
Along with black kale, I harvested the seed pods that form after wild garlic flowers. I recently learned they can be used like pepper and was curious to try. They’re not quite peppery, but I think they’ll be great for decoration or added flavor—good to know!
And here’s the shot. It still slow in change but I’m looking forward it gets the jungle-like vibe with summer vegetables soon 😁
With the garden work easing up a little, I enjoy outdoor cooking. I recently brewed my first outdoor coffee and shared it with the Cinnamon Cup Coffee community. Take a look!

Next Week's To-Do
Since getting the garden, I’ve mostly been hand-weeding where necessary, and a friend once helped me mow, but with summer approaching, I think it’s time to get a proper grass trimmer. I’d also like to tidy up and clean the small shed in the garden.
And that’s a wrap on this week’s small-and-large garden adventures. Wishing everyone a wonderful Sunday.
Happy gardening! 🌱
That's gardening!
"Klein"

Happy gardening!
I'm curious about the building in the garden. Is it yours? A shed tour would be great 😍
Yes it came with the garden. A lot of cleaning and repair needed but my daughter is really motivated. She regards it's her first house 😁
It's perfect!
We have some strawberries that are almost ripe. Always nice to have the first ones of the year.

.Everything is growing beautifully! Wild garlic seeds are delicious added to mayoinaisse too. Just to let you know, I'll be off to Bali on holiday so I might not get chance to properly curate, but I'll be back around the 13th.

It seems like people are having a really easy time growing strawberries LOL. I can't even get roots to grow in the growing medium here.
