Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025 - 11 May / 大小庭の記録

The weather in Germany has warmed up enough to plant summer vegetables, so I got a little ahead of schedule and planted some out on the balcony and in the garden. While sipping coffee from my Hive mug, I found myself reminiscing about last week’s Hive Creators Day and looking forward to Hive Fest in October.

Micro Balcony Update

The strawberries on the balcony have started to ripen. Two years have passed since my mother passed away, and I remember how I planted lots of strawberries with my daughter in memory of her. This year, I’m looking forward not only to eating them fresh but also making jam with rhubarb from the garden.

I moved the black kale and Swiss chard to the garden and made room for tomatoes on the balcony. The ones I planted have cheerful names like Fuzzy Wuzzy, Lambada, and India Moon. I picked them up at Manufactum, a favorite design store, as a fun choice for my child.

With strawberries and tomatoes growing side by side, it feels like my daughter and my mother—both of whom love those fruits—are living here together. It made me smile 😊 Moments like these feel so special.

Oh, and the asparagus? I didn’t eat it after all, just like the last years it grows like trees ... I plan to move it to the garden, and hopefully next year, I’ll finally enjoy homegrown asparagus.

The “Klein” but Big Garden

To celebrate Mother’s Day, I brought summer veggie seedlings to the garden with my daughter. Honestly, I’d rather spend this time of year in the garden than at a fancy restaurant 😉

We planted space-hungry crops like pumpkins and zucchini. It felt so satisfying to finally be able to grow larger plants this year. I also planted corn and beans alongside the pumpkins, hoping to try the “Three Sisters” method—a companion planting tradition passed down by Native Americans that I’ve always wanted to try.

TODO for Next Week

Today, I forgot to bring the goya seedlings to the garden! So next week, I’m planning to go by bike for some exercise and to take care of that. I also want to finish planting the corn. On top of that, it’s time to start thinking ahead to fall and winter seedlings—which always makes me feel a bit nostalgic.

This year, I want to create more space on the balcony, so I’ll try to tidy it up bit by bit whenever I find a free moment.

Bonus – Plant Stall Surprise at the Thai Festival

Yesterday, I went to the Thai Festival with a gardening friend who rents the plot next to mine. To our delight, there was one plant seller—and what a find! They had so many unfamiliar plants, and we got super excited.

Discovering a nursery that specializes in Thai plants here in Germany may be a sign that I could become a Japanese nursery myself—offering Japanese plants 😁 Actually I do with Shiso. Let's see how my life goes!

母の日ですね。ドイツでも夏野菜を植えられるくらいの気温になってきて、数日フライング気味で、バルコニーと庭に夏野菜を植えました。バルコニーではHiveマグでコーヒーを飲みながら、一週間前のHive Creators Dayを思い出しつつ、10月のHive Festを楽しみにしています。

バルコニーではいちごが実をつけ始めました。二年前に母が他界して、子供と母との思い出のいちごをたくさん植えたのが懐かしいです。今年は生で食べるほか、庭のルバーブと合わせてジャムも作るぞと収穫を楽しみにしています。

黒ケールやマンゴールドを庭に移して、バルコニー用のトマトの場所を作って、植え付けました。Fuzzy Wuzzy、Lambada、India Moonなどなど名前の響きが愉快なトマトたちで、Manufactumというお気に入りのデザインストアで見つけて子供用に買ったのでした。

いちごとトマトが共存していると、どっちも大好きな子供と母が一緒に住んでいるようで、なんだか笑ってしまいました 😊 こういう思い出っていいですね。

そうそう、アスパラガスは結局食べずに例年通り気になりましたとさ・・・。一段落したら庭に移して、来年こそは自家製アスパラガスを食べたいです。

ガーデニング好きな母は、母の日ということで、夏野菜の苗をあれこれ持って、子供と庭に行ってきました。レストランでお祝いするよりもこの時期は庭に行きたい・・・！

スペースが必要なカボチャやズッキーニを植えて、ああ、今年は大きくなる植物も植えられるようになってうれしいなあと感慨深かったです。かぼちゃとともに、とうもろこしと豆を植えて、スリーシスターズという長年やってみたかった組み合わせで育ててみようと思っています。ネイティブアメリカンの間で伝わるコンパニオンプランティングの方法です。

来週のTODO

今日、庭にゴーヤの苗を持っていくのを忘れてしまい、来週は運動もかねて自転車で庭に行きたいなと思っています。とうもろこしの植え付けもしたいな。あとは、この時期恒例でノスタルジックな気分になる、秋冬苗の準備も始めないと。

今年はバルコニーにもう少しスペースを作ろうと思っていて、バルコニーの片付けを日々の隙間時間で進めていきたいところです。

番外編 - タイフェスでも植物屋さんを堪能

隣の区画を借りているガーデニング友達と昨日タイフェスティバルを見に行ってきました。そうしたらなんと、一件だけ植木屋さんが。見たことのない植物が山盛りで二人で大盛り上がりしました。

ドイツでこういうタイや近隣地域に特化した植木屋さんがあるのを知ったのは大きな収穫で、私も紫蘇を売る季節性のマイクロ苗屋で、日本の植物の植木屋さんになれるよというお知らせかも！？なんて😁
