Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025 - 04 May / 大小庭の記録

With temperatures finally rising above 20°C　in the daytime here in Germany, I just can’t help but feel excited! Still, there’s a risk of late frost until mid-May, so I’m holding back on planting for now. Even my zucchini and pumpkins have to be patient in door 😅

Next week, I plan to start bringing the summer veggie seedlings out onto the balcony during the day to help them get used to the outdoor air.

The Micro-Balcony and Indoor Plants

As usual for this time of year, leafy greens have started growing steadily. I planted 12 seedlings in March and meant to add more, but missed the timing. Now I’m harvesting a mix of those 12 leafy greens along with winter staples like purslane and corn salad from last year, plus some random arugula and herbs that have popped up. I use them for salads and sandwiches. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for growing greens since there’s less worry about pests or watering. You can get a surprising amount even from a small space—definitely worth a try! It’s especially easy if you buy seedlings.

On the balcony, the asparagus suddenly sprouted up. Just a few days ago, I was wondering where it was—and then, boom! It popped out of the soil. This is the third year, so I’d like to harvest, but since there are only two spears and ChatGPT says it’s better to let the plant grow stronger... 😭 But plant's health first.

Next to the asparagus, the strawberry plants I planted with my daughter two years ago in memory of my mother have started flowering. I’m already looking forward to harvesting strawberries from the balcony again this year ☺️

The "Klein" but Big Garden

Before heading to Hive Creators Day, I made a quick visit to the garden to bring some plants from the balcony and to do some tidying up.

The first thing I noticed was the apple tree in full bloom. It was absolutely beautiful. According to my friend who rents the neighboring plot, it produces green apples. I can’t wait ... the harvest and apple pies 😁

I trimmed the overgrown grass and added it to the compost, prepped the space for planting summer vegetables, and checked on the plants. The onions and radishes have started sprouting—this is the first attempt at growing onions in my life, so fingers crossed 🧅

I didn’t plant them myself, but I had my first harvest of the year—rhubarb! I plan to make jam with strawberries. Since I was about to leave for Hive Creators Day and the strawberries weren’t there yet, I decided to keep them in the freezer.

And, here’s the usual fixed-point photo. Honestly, spring in the garden feels like being in heaven. I hesitated at first because it’s a bit far from home, but I’m so glad I decided to rent it.

To-Do for Next Week

This weekend, Leipzig University’s botanical garden will host its twice-yearly plant market. I’m hoping to find a small peach tree for the balcony and a grapevine for the garden—though I suspect I’ll come home with a few more plants than planned. “Welcoming them into the family” will be one of my next week’s gardening tasks.

Since I’ve sold almost all shiso plants, there is some room on the balcony. I’ll repot my Hive Fest fig (I’ve been growing them from tasty Croatian fig from the last year's Hive Fest) into pots and cell trays.

And of course, I mustn’t forget to start hardening off the summer veggie seedlings.

ドイツでも気温が20度を超える日が出てきて、うれしくてうれしくてしかたありません。でも5月なかばまでは遅霜の心配があるので、植えるのを我慢しています。ズッキーニやかぼちゃにもがまんしてもらっています 😅 来週は日中は夏野菜をバルコニーに出して外気にならしていこうと思います。

この時期恒例、葉物が安定して採れるようになってきました。3月に12株植えて、植え足そうと思っていたのですが、タイミングを逃してしまいました。葉物12株と、去年まいた冬の定番のスベリヒユとノヂシャ、なんとなく生えているルッコラやハーブ類を適当に摘んで、サラダやサンドイッチに使っています。春と秋は害虫や水やりの心配が少なく、葉物を育てやすいです。小さなスペースでも結構採れるので、ぜひ試してみてください。苗を買うと簡単ですよ！

バルコニーでは、突然アスパラガスが芽を出しました。数日前にそういえばアスパラガスどうしているだろう、まだ出ていないなと思ったらにょきっと。3年目なので収穫したいけれど、2本の場合は株を成長させた方がいいとChatGPTが言うので、おあずけにします。近所のオーガニックショップにアスパラガスの苗が並んでいたので、庭用に2株ほど買おうと思っています。

アスパラガスのそばでは、2年前に亡くなった母の思い出にと子供と植えたいちごが花を咲かせていて、今年もバルコニーでたくさんいちごを収穫できるといいなと今から楽しみです。

"Klein"だけれど大きい庭の様子

今週はHive Creators Dayの前に庭の手入れに行きました。庭についてまず目についたのが、満開のりんごの木でした！なんてきれいなんだろう。隣の区画を借りている友人いわく緑のりんごがなるようで楽しみです。

伸びている草を刈って、コンポストに積んで、夏野菜を植える場所を整えつつ、植物の様子を見てまわりました。たまねぎやラディッシュの芽が出ていました。人生初の玉ねぎ栽培、うまくいきますように 🧅

私が植えたわけではありませんが、初収穫がありました。ルバーブです。いちごと煮てジャムにしようと思います。いちごがまだなのと、Hive Creators Dayに出発する前日だったのとで、とりあえず筋をとって小さく切って冷凍しておきました。

恒例の定点写真も貼っておきます。ほんと、春の庭って、天国のようで、当初家からの距離に迷ったけれど借りてよかったです ☺️

来週のTODO

今週末はライプツィヒ大学の植物園で年に2回の植物市があります。バルコニーで鉢植えで育てられる小さな桃の木と、庭用に葡萄の木を買いたいなと思っていますが、他にもあれこれほしいものが出てきそうです。徐々にうちの子にしていくのが来週の庭仕事の一つです。

紫蘇が売れてバルコニーにスペースができたので、Hive Festイチヂク（去年のHive Festでそれはそれはおいしいイチヂクをもらって、その種からイチヂクを育てています）を鉢やセルトレイに植え替えていこうと思います。

夏野菜の苗を外気にならすのも忘れないようにしないと。
