I Discovered Schlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehr — A Lifesaver for Travel Compensation / 旅行の補償請求で困って知ったSchlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehrがすごかった
I wanted to share this experience with fellow travel lovers on Hive Blog. Did you know there’s a mediation body that can help you resolve issues in EU with airlines and travel companies — fairly, efficiently, and for free?
Last year, on my way back from Hive Fest, my Austrian Airlines flight from Croatia to Germany was delayed. I ended up spending the night in Vienna and flew back to Germany the following day. I submitted a compensation claim through the Austrian Airlines customer portal, and at first, I received reimbursement for the airport-hotel transfer and meal. But communication suddenly stopped — even though I had confirmed that Austrian Airline would cover the hotel cost at the time of the rescheduled flight.
My German-speaking partner even tried calling their customer support, but was told over and over to “please use the online portal.” We were stuck.
While waiting in Vienna, I started reading up on what to do in case of a delay — and that’s when I came across EU Regulation 261/2004, which outlines passenger rights for flights departing from, arriving in, or transiting through the EU. I also found a blog post by a Japanese person who had struggled dealing with notorious Ryan airlines, and who had been helped by a mediation service.
I learned about the Schlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehr (formerly söp, the German conciliation body for public transport). It offers a free, neutral service to resolve travel disputes — including flight delays, cancellations, or denied boarding.

There are also commercial services that buy your claim for a percentage of the refund, but I wanted to try the official path.
In my case, I didn’t receive the €250 flat-rate compensation under EU261 — the delay was labeled “due to weather” by Austrian Airline. Still, the mediation helped me get back the €130 hotel cost, and I was also issued proper documents to submit to my travel insurance. In the end, the insurance reimbursed me another €330.
Since it was my first time dealing with something like this, I contacted the mediation service pretty late. But they kindly informed me that you can reach out if your case remains unresolved after two months. Next time, I’ll be able to handle things more smoothly — though I hope there won’t be a next time!

EU域内の航空会社や旅行会社とのトラブル対応をていねいに助けてくれる調停機関があるので、旅好きの多そうなHie Blogで共有しようと思います。ドイツの機関ですが、ドイツ外の人もサポートを受けられます。
私は去年のHive Festの帰り道、クロアチアからドイツへのオーストリア航空の便が遅延してウィーンに一泊して、翌日ドイツに戻りました。オーストリア航空のカスタマーポータルから補償請求をしていたのですが、ぱったり返信がなくなり、その時点で返ってきたのは、ウィーン泊の空港からホテルへの交通費と食事代のみ。ホテル代については、フライトがリスケジューリングされた時点でオーストリア航空に補償されることを確認済でした。
ドイツ語ネイティブの相方がオーストリア航空に電話しても、カスタマーサポートは、カスタマーポータルから連絡してくれの一点張りでにっちもさっちも行きません。
ウィーンで対応を待ちながら、遅延が起きた時の対応について調べていると、EU域内を発着・経由する便において乗客が補償を受ける権利を規定した「EU規則261/2004」という規則があることを知りました。この規則について読んでいると、航空会社とのやりとりに苦戦した方のブログ記事があって、調停機関に助けてもらったと書いてあったような・・・。
利用者が返還金額の一部を支払って補償を受ける権利を買い取ってくれるサービスもありますが、Schlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehr(旧 Schlichtungsstelle für den öffentlichen Personenverkehr(söp))に依頼することもできます。Schlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehrの運営は会員企業によって賄われているとのこと。

EU規則261/2004の保証については「悪天候」の一言で250ユーロの補償は受けられませんでしたが、ホテル代約130ユーロが支払われ、保険会社に提出するためのドキュメントもゲットでき、旅行保険からの補償が330ユーロほど支払われることになりました。
初めてのトラブルで不慣れだったこともあり、ずいぶん遅れてSchlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehrに連絡をとりましたが、2ヶ月トラブルが解決されなかったら助けを求められるとのこと。次回からはもうちょっとスムーズに対応できそうです。遅れがないに越したことはありませんが!

Whenever your European flight is delayed for more than three hours, you can claim compensation off them. There are conditions of course eg your flight must start or begin in Europe or it has to be a European airline, and the delay must be due to the airline's fault, so bad weather or strikes don't count.
The Christmas before last I went to Koln, and on the return journey we got diverted to another airport 100km away due to bad weather and was delayed for less than an hour. However, we know other flights could land at our original around the same time as us. In the end it took the EJ 6 hours to arrange a coach to take everyone back to our original airport.
I made a claim off them and used the €250 compensation to go to Porto a few months later. Free holiday 😄
