Hive Garden QUTW #15 - A Child's Garden / 子供とガーデニング

When I was a child, I used to enjoy gardening with my grandparents and my mother. I think those early memories are the reason why growing plants now feels like a natural part of my daily life.
And now, my daughter is growing up surrounded by plants too.

I don’t exactly teach her how to garden—it’s more like she’s just always nearby when I’m out gardening, and she’s picked it up naturally.

When she was just a little over one year old, we bought her first plant: a tomato. Maybe that’s why she loves tomatoes just as much as I do.

It’s become a yearly tradition for us to grow them together. This year, we’re growing five balcony-friendly varieties, including one with the fun name “Fuzzy Wuzzy.”

I think small-fruiting cherry tomatoes like the one in the photo above are great for kids. They’re exciting to watch grow, and the chances of a successful harvest are high—making it a joyful and encouraging experience for little gardeners.

Another plant I highly recommend for kids is strawberries. In our local market, you can find healthy, affordable strawberry seedlings. There are many types—from early spring bearers to ones that keep fruiting until late summer.

Strawberries are pretty tough, and they can be grown easily in planters on a balcony. They often bear fruit in the same year you plant them, and since they’re perennial, you can look forward to a harvest again next year too.

So far, it seems like my daughter enjoys gardening just as much as Minecraft 😉 There was a time when I lived in Tokyo and worked full-time when I didn’t garden at all, but somehow I always found myself coming back to it—like it was rooted deep in me. So I can’t help but hope it will become a lifelong hobby for her too.

One little bonus from starting gardening so early: she’s not a picky eater! She’s happy to eat a wide variety of veggies with me, which brings me so much joy.

私は子供の頃、祖父母や母とガーデニングをしたのが楽しくて、そのころのおかげだと思います、植物を育てるという行為が日常に溶け込んでいます。ということで、うちの子供も植物と共に育っています。

子供には、ガーデニングを教えるというか、私がガーデニングをしている横にいることが多かったので、勝手に覚えていきました。一歳と少しの頃に一番最初の一鉢を買って、それがトマトだったからか、私と同じくらいトマトが大好きです。トマトを育てるのは毎年恒例になっていて、今年はFuzzy Wuzzyなど楽しい名前のついたバルコニー向けのトマトを5種類一緒に育てています。

子供におすすめなのは、上の写真のような実がついているミニトマトです。気分があがったまま収穫を迎えられる確率が高く、きっとガーデニングを好きになってくれるはず。

子供におすすめの植物をもう一つ。いちごもおすすめです。私が住んでいる地域のマーケットでは、手頃な値段で立派ないちごの苗が売られています。種類も春に早く実がつくものから、夏の終わり・・・いや、去年は12月まで実がついていたものまでさまざまです。いちごは比較的強くて、バルコニーでプランターで育てることもできます。植えた年に収穫が期待できるのもいいところ。多年草なので、植えておければ翌年も収穫できます。

今の所子供はマインクラフトと同じくらいガーデニングを楽しんでいるようです 😉 私自身、東京で会社員をしていたときに一時的にガーデニングをしなかったことはありますが、三つ子の魂百までで、気がつくと再開しているので、きっとこどもにも一生に趣味になるのではないかなと期待しています。

あと、もうひとつおまけがあって、赤ちゃんの頃からガーデニングをしているせいか、子供にはあまり好き嫌いがなく、いろいろ一緒に食べてくれるのが楽しくてうれしいです。
