Croatian food I liked during Hive Fest / Hive Fest

(Edited)

Even though Mediterranean cuisine is quite common in Germany, Split, Croatia where Hive Fest (@hivefest) took place last week is the real deal. The simple yet flavorful dishes made with the local produce were truly delightful.

Now, let me introduce some of the delicious dishes I enjoyed in Split during Hive Fest!

Simple Grilled Vegetables

The grilled vegetables served at the hotel breakfast were so delicious that I piled them on my plate every morning. The natural flavor of the vegetables came out with each bite, and I couldn’t get enough of them. Even after eating them every day for five days, I was still craving more, and on the last day, I even went for a second round 😁

I loved them so much that I asked a person in the hotel kitchen how they were made. The answer was simple: just grill vegetables on a grill pan! I thought they must have been generously coated with the olive oil, but it turns out most of the flavor came from the vegetables' own juices.

Though I had hesitated to buy a grill pan before due to its weight, I ordered a Staub 22cm square grill pan as soon as I got back home. My veg grilling party starts!

Figs

The second thing I couldn’t get enough of was figs. I had read that figs are a local specialty in Croatia, but I really got hooked when LivingUkTaiwan brought fresh figs from her Airbnb host, and they were absolutely delicious. They were the best figs I had in my life.

I was wondering whether to bring fresh or dried figs back home as a souvenir for my family, and I ended up choosing the dried ones. But then, to my surprise, LivingUkTaiwan brought me fresh figs to the closing party!

Unfortunately, due to a delayed flight and lost luggage, we couldn’t enjoy the figs I received, but I’m now trying to grow them from the seeds. It would be super if I could grow those figs on my balcony 😊

Truffles

I love the aroma of truffles, and I was looking forward to trying truffle dishes even before Hive Fest started. The truffle cream pasta I had at a restaurant dinner was incredibly delicious.

Wanting to recreate it at home, I took probably one hour at the Split Airport shop to see and compare truffle products.

In the end I bought a jar of Truffles. It was the most pure one with just a bit of salt and water. I had few slices already and look forward to use it for cooking and making Truffle oil.

Incredibly Tender Meat

At the restaurant dinner on the second day, incredibly tender beef was served. I regret not asking the restaurant how they made the meat or at least its name 😭 It reminded me a little of German Sauerbraten, a typical winter beef dish.

I took a break from being vegetarian during my stay in Split and savored the two large pieces of meat. It felt like I had enough for the next few years 😉

Croatian Sushi and Seafood

The closing party was held at a bar also famous for its sushi. As a Japanese person, I was curious about the sushi they would serve, and although I expected drinks to be the main focus, we were surprised with sushi platters on each table.

I was first impressed by the perfectly cooked rice with no hard uncooked core. The Croatian sushi, including rolls with fried shrimp, was delicious. I tend to make Japanese-style sushi at home, but now I’m thinking of trying European-style sushi.

Speaking of seafood, I also enjoyed the fried small squid at a restaurant near the hotel. Freshly fried, it was perfectly crispy and delicious.

Warm Pizza from a Bakery

During my stay, after swimming and walking, I often grabbed a slice of pizza from a local bakery to satisfy my hunger. Not only was it delicious, but it was also budget-friendly, at just €2.6 in this size. Whether freshly baked or kept warm, it was always warm and tasty.

Conclusion

I also have fond memories of Stxxm Fest in Krakow, Poland, back in 2018, where both the food and drinks were exceptional. The great planning by the Hive Fest team and the local hosts made it. Honestly, Hive Fest is worth attending just for the food 😁

So Foodie Bee Hive friends, why not consider joining next year!

I believe the beef was ox cheeks, that's why it's so tender. I think it might be some sort of special local dish as I saw it in quite a lot of restaurants

I went in Croatia too many times this year too but two days after the hive Fest because my sister in law it's Croatian 🇭🇷 I enjoyed more traditional Croatian food like cevapcici, fuzi and rizi bizi, they really have a lot of dishes with truffles 🇭🇷🇭🇷
