Every day, news reports highlight cases of married women being killed by their husbands or husbands being killed by their wives. Disturbingly, such incidents have become almost routine. Yet people continue to marry without hesitation. Thousands of divorces occur annually, countless cases of marital violence are registered, and millions are paid as alimony. It seems that in the modern world many men and women are dissatisfied within marriage.

Marriage requires compromise, patience, and the willingness to coexist despite differences. However, many individuals today are unwilling to take these responsibilities. Instead of resolving conflicts, they prefer to end the relationship. Extramarital affairs have also become more common, and when exposed, some individuals react aggressively, even resorting to violence. This reflects a troubling trend in our modern society.

The solution, however, is certainly not violence. Divorce is a far more humane and rational option. Laws should be structured to make divorce simpler when both partners are unwilling to continue. Forcing incompatible individuals to remain together serves no purpose. In particular, Indian courts and lawmakers must reconsider the current system, which often prolongs suffering and disrupts lives of both the partners.

Society must also adopt a more liberal mindset. Those who choose divorce should not be stigmatized. Parents, too, must avoid pressuring their children into unwanted marriages. This shift is essential for the well‑being of individuals and society as a whole. In my view, society and laws have no right over the life of a person, unless that person is not harming others.
