When Admiration Turns into Obsession: Reflections on Fandom and Boundaries

I had a conversation about ten years ago that, for some reason I don't know, I never forgot. It’s one of those things that surprises you for still remembering, even though it seems like an insignificant event.

I don’t remember how it started, but I was with a group of college classmates talking about the series Arrow, and I said I had difficulty watching it because I didn’t really like the actor. Even though I found him handsome—which is often reason enough for many young women to watch a show—for me, he was a terrible actor. I expressed my opinion and gave some arguments, citing scenes I no longer remember, since it’s been so long. However, after I shared my opinion about the actor, a guy who was my friend at the time completely changed his attitude toward me because he was obsessed with the series.

At that moment, I realized that some people turn their personal tastes into something that defines their personality. That guy never spoke to me directly again and started treating me coldly, simply because I didn’t like his favorite show. I think that’s silly, and differences in taste shouldn’t be enough to harm a friendly relationship, but unfortunately, many people don’t see it that way.

A more recent and extreme example I can give is that last year, while reading some posts on X, I came across an argument between Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish fans. In that discussion, which I didn’t spend more than two minutes reading, I saw absurd things being said. I remember thinking, "My God, how far will people go for an artist they like?" Well, history tells us that they will go as far as murder.

Perhaps many reading this post are young and don’t know the story, but on December 8, 1980, John Lennon was assassinated by a fan. That’s what fanatics are capable of when their idols don’t meet their expectations. They love them so much that they either want to become them or hurt them. It’s a disease that, unfortunately, affects thousands of people.

Lately, I’ve seen some artists reacting with a certain level of aggression to fan harassment, like singer Cardi B, who threw a microphone at a fan who threw water at her. It’s hard to judge a strong reaction from artists—we need to consider what they’ve been through to react that way. I’ve read some articles about certain celebrities who don’t even like taking pictures with fans. When I was younger, I used to judge that as antipathy and a lack of responsibility toward their fans, but nowadays, I think that in many cases, these artists must have experienced things that traumatized them.

Last week, I read an article about tennis player Emma Raducanu, who was stalked by a man across four different countries while she was competing. That’s extremely serious. In her last match, she cried upon seeing the man in the audience and asked the umpire to stop the game, informing her about the situation. Security removed the stalker from the court. From now on, she will have private security to ensure her safety.

This type of situation is very serious, and it makes me more understanding of artists who react in an extreme way when trying to protect their privacy and have even the smallest semblance of a normal life.

Tive uma conversa há uns dez anos atrás que por um motivo que eu desconheço, nunca esqueci. É daquelas coisas que a gente se impressiona por ainda lembrar, embora aparentemente seja um acontecimento insignificante.

Não lembro como começou, mas estava com um grupo de colegas da faculdade falando sobre a série Arrow, e eu dizia que tinha dificuldade de assistir essa série porque não gostava muito do ator. Embora eu achasse ele lindo, o que muitas vezes pode ser motivo o suficiente para a maioria das jovens quererem assistir alguma produção, pra mim, ele era um péssimo ator. Eu demonstrei minha opinião e citei alguns argumentos como cenas das quais não me lembro agora, afinal, já faz muito tempo. Porém, depois que dei minha opinião sobre o autor, um rapaz que era amigo meu na época mudou completamente comigo, porque ele era obcecado pela série.

Ali eu entendi que algumas pessoas tornam seus gostos pessoais algo que definem a personalidade delas. O rapaz em questão nunca mais falou comigo direto, e passou a me tratar com frieza, simplesmente porque eu não gostava da série favorita dele. Eu penso que isso é uma bobeira, e gostos diferentes não devem ser capazes de atrapalhar uma relação de coleguismo e amizade, mas infelizmente muitas pessoas não pensam assim.

Um exemplo mais recente e extremo que posso utilizar, é que ano passado lendo alguns posts no X, me deparei com uma briga entre fãs de Taylor Swift e Billie Ailish. Nessa discussão, da qual não passei mais de dois minutos lendo, vi coisas absurdas sendo ditas pelas pessoas. Lembro de ter pensando ‘’Meu Deus, até que ponto as pessoas vão por um artista que elas gostam?’’ Bem, a história diz que vão a ponto do assassinato.

Talvez muitos que leiam esse post sejam jovens e não conheçam a história, mas em 8 de Dezembro de 1980, John Lennon foi assassinado por um fã. É isso que pessoas fanáticas são capazes de fazer quando seus ídolos não correspondem às suas expectativas. Elas os amam a ponto de querer ser quem eles são ou os machucarem. É uma doença, que infelizmente afeta milhares de pessoas.

Tenho visto ultimamente alguns artistas que reagem com uma certa violência ao assédio dos fãs, como a cantora Cardi B que jogou um microfone numa fã que jogou água nela. É difícil julgar uma reação mais incisiva dos artistas, é preciso pensar o que eles já tiveram que passar pra ter uma reação assim. Já li algumas matérias onde determinadas celebridades não gostam nem de tirar fotos com seus fãs, quando eu era mais nova, eu julgava isso como antipatia e falta de responsabilidades com os fãs, hoje em dia eu penso que em muitos casos esses artistas devem ter passado por coisas que os traumatizaram.

Semana passada, li uma matéria sobre a tenista Emma Raducanu que foi perseguida por um cara por 4 países diferentes enquanto competia. Isso é algo muito sério. Na sua última partida, ela chorou ao ver o homem na plateia, e pediu para a juíza parar o jogo, informou a situação para ela, e os seguranças retiraram o stalker da quadra. A partir dos jogos ela terá seguranças particulares para prezar por sua segurança. Esse tipo de situação é muito séria, e faz com que eu não julgue a reação mais exagerada dos artistas que buscam privacidade e ter o mínimo do que pareça uma vida normal.
