My Brilliant Friend - A brilliant book.

My interest in "A amiga genial" (My Brilliant Friend) arose from following a book translator I really like on Instagram. Every now and then, he would recommend this work, but without saying much about it, just commenting on one aspect or another that the story addressed, such as envy and competitiveness. It had been over two years since I last read any fiction, so I decided to give this book a chance, and it ended up becoming one of my favorites.

My Brilliant Friend is the first book in a tetralogy written by Elena Ferrante. Elena Ferrante herself is a mystery: no one knows who she really is, she only gives interviews via email, and the curious thing is that the narrator of the book is named Elena Greco, so I imagine, like many others, that it is a true story. Perhaps with names and surnames replaced by pseudonyms, but the truth is that My Brilliant Friend feels like a real story, in addition to the fact that Elena Ferrante is an excellent writer. Anyway, I understand why she wanted to preserve her anonymity, and when you read it, you will understand too.

The story is set in Naples, Italy, and it begins with the older Elena Greco (Lenu) receiving a call from her friend's son, Raffaella Cerullo (Lila). He tells her that his mother has disappeared, taking her clothes and cutting out all the photos in which she appears, and simply vanished. Lenu says she doesn't know where she is, but reminds him that she always talked about doing this. Frustrated with her friend's desire to disappear without a trace, Lenu decides to tell their whole story from the day she met Lila, thus defying her friend's wish to be forgotten.

From then on, we get to know the story of their lives in a poor neighborhood in Naples, always from Lenu's perspective, who at various moments makes us doubt her character and her pessimistic, emotional, and competitive view of her friend. The narrative is very detailed, and the writing somewhat elaborate. It may not appeal to younger readers, but if there's one thing I regret, it's not having read this story sooner. Being a woman, it's impossible not to identify with certain experiences that the main characters go through. Even though the story takes place in the post-war 1950s, there are themes that are still relevant in a woman's life today. However, the book is for all genders; there are so many aspects of human psychology portrayed in such a believable way that it is impossible for a person not to identify with at least one character. It can even be uncomfortable when we occasionally identify with certain flaws that we never stopped to observe in ourselves, but reading the book is like looking in a mirror.

All the identification that the story generates is the backdrop where both Lenu and Lila's relationship unfolds, as well as their relationships with the various characters who are important in building the context of the main events. Elena Ferrante's writing, even though elaborate and excessively detailed in some points, is extremely captivating. The way she judges people, analyzes facts, and sees herself makes us feel like we are inside her head, as if those thoughts had already been our own, and because of that, it is common to feel astonishment and anguish at being inside the mind of someone so obsessed with another person, as she is with her friend.

My Brilliant Friend is undoubtedly a story worth reading; it is definitely no wonder that it is considered a modern classic. It is a plot that touches us and shows us humanity as it is: full of flaws and sides that are so ugly that sometimes it's difficult to face. If you enjoyed this simple review and would like to understand a little more about the atmosphere of this book, I discovered shortly after finishing it that there is a TV series of the same name on HBO Max. They say the series is very good and faithful to the books. I haven't seen it yet, and I don't know if I intend to watch it before reading the remaining three books in the series. But if you venture into this story through the TV series, don't forget to tell me what you think.

Meu interesse por A amiga genial surgiu ao acompanhar pelo Instagram um tradutor de livros que gosto muito. Vez ou outra, ele recomendava essa obra, mas sem falar muito sobre ela, apenas comentava um aspecto o outro que a história abordava, como a inveja e a competivividade. Como fazia mais de dois anos que não lia nenhuma ficção, resolvi dar uma chance para esse que acabou se tornando um dos meus livros favoritos.

A Amiga Genial é o primeiro livro de uma tetralogia escrita por Elena Ferrante, que é um mistério: ninguém sabe quem ela realmente é, ela só da entrevista por e-mails e o curioso é que a narradora do livro se chama Elena Greco, então eu imagino, assim como muitos, que se trata de uma história real. Talvez com nomes e sobrenomes substituidos por pseudônimos, mas a verdade é que a A Amiga Genial cheira como uma história real, além do fato de Elena Ferrante ser uma excelente escritora. De qualquer forma, eu entendo porque ela quis se preservar, e quando você ler, também entenderá.

A história se passa em Nápoles, Itália. E começa com Elena Greco (Lenu), mais velha, recebendo a ligação do filho de seu amiga, Rafaella Cerullo (Lila). Ele lhe diz que sua mãe sumiu, levou as roupas, recortou todas as fotos em que ela aparecia, e simplesmente desapareceu. Lenu diz que não sabe onde ela está, mas o relembra que ela sempre falou sobre fazer isso. Chateda com atitude da amiga de querer sumir sem deixar rastros, Lenu decide contar toda a história dela desde o dia em que a conheceu, desafiando assim o desejo da amiga de ser esquecida.

Dai por diante, conhecemos a história de como era a vida das duas num bairro pobre de Nápoles, sempre através da perspectiva de Lenu, que em vários momentos nos faz duvidar do seu caráter e de sua visão pessimista, emocional e competitiva em relação a amiga. A narrativa é muito detalhista, e a escrita um tanto rebuscada. Pode não agradar leitores mais jovens, porém se tem algo que me arrependo, é de não ter lido essa história antes. Sendo mulher, não há como não se identificar com certas experiências que as personagens principais vivem. Mesmo a história se passando na década de 50 pós guerra, existem temáticas que são atuais até hoje na vida de uma mulher. Porém, o livro é para todos os gêneros; são tantos aspectos da psicologia humana abordados de forma tão verossímil que é impossível uma pessoa não se identificar com algum personagem. É até incomodo quando eventualmente nos identificamos com alguns defeitos que nunca paramos pra observar em nós mesmos mas que lendo o livro, é como se olhássemos para um espelho.

Toda a identificação que a história gera é o plano de fundo onde se desenvolve tanto o relacionamento de Lenu e Lila, quanto o relacionamento delas com os diversos personagens que são de certa forma importantes para contruir o contexto dos principais acontecimentos. A escrita de Elena Ferrante, mesmo rebuscada, mesmo exageradamente detalhista em alguns pontos, é extremamente cativante. A forma como ela julga as pessoas, como analisa os fatos e como vê a si mesma, faz com que nos sintamos que estamos dentro da cabeça dela, como se aqueles pensamentos já tivessem sido nossos, e por causa disso, é comum o espanto e angustia por estar dentro da cabeça de alguém tão obsecado por outra pessoa, como ela é por sua amiga.

A amiga genial é sem dúvida uma história que vale a pena ser lida, definitivamente não é a toa que se trata de um clássico moderno. É um enredo que nos toca, e que nos mostra a humanidade como ela é: cheia de defeitos e lados tão feios que ás vezes é difícil de encarar. Se você gostou dessa simples resenha e gostaria de entender um pouco mais da atmosfera desse livro, eu descobri logo depois que terminei o livro, que há uma série na HBO Max do mesmo nome. Dizem que a série é muito boa e fiel aos livros, eu ainda não vi, e não sei se pretendo ver até ler os três livros restantes dessa obra. Mas, se você forem se aventurar por essa história através da série de tv, não deixem de me contar o que acharam.
