Intergalactic Thief
Hagios watched the cat in the restaurant while waiting for his soup. It wasn't dark yet, and the faint light coming through the glass windows created a play of shadows where the cat lying on the floor seemed to have two of them. That caught his attention, and he kept watching the black cat with its two shadows, as if it were three in one. For some reason, that simple image made him forget his problems for a few seconds.
"Your mushroom soup, sir," said the waitress, interrupting his musings.
"Thank you... what's the cat's name?"
"Huh? That furball? His name is Cosmos."
"Cosmos..." Hagios whispered, smiling at the irony.
The waitress thought Hagios was funny—but also handsome. She stood there watching him smile for a moment until he noticed, and she walked away embarrassed. As he began to eat his soup, Hagios couldn’t quite taste it—not because it was bad, but because he was too melancholic to truly savor anything. Still, he insisted and ate it all, knowing he would miss that soup when he was finally arrested and taken back to his planet.
"May I clear the table?" asked the waitress, seeing he had finished eating.
"Sure, thank you."
"Hey, would you like a fortune cookie?"
"A fortune cookie?"
"Yes, haha, well... I know this isn’t a Chinese restaurant, but our fortune cookies are really popular. They have lots of nice messages, you know? Stoic, or philosophical. People tend to really like them, and most say the messages speak to their hearts or have some kind of meaning. Anyway, I’ll go get the jar so you can choose one, okay? Oh my God, I talked too much, haha, sorry, I’ll be right back."
The waitress cleared the table, then returned with a jar full of different fortune cookies, unlike any Hagios had ever seen.
"How does it work?" he asked.
"You’ve never seen a fortune cookie before? Haha, well, you just break it, and there’s a message inside."
"Oh, I see. Thank you."
Hagios picked one while the waitress took the jar back. When he broke it with his fingers, he noticed a small folded piece of paper.
"You will see what you seek when you stop seeking."
When he read it, he began to wonder how he could find a solution to his problem without searching. How could he avoid being captured? How could he keep running? And where could he flee without being found? Solutions must be sought; answers must be pursued. That fortune cookie made no sense. He stood up without looking at the waitress and left the paper behind. He felt frustrated.
As he walked down the street, he started to recall how his decisions had led him to that planet, that moment, that feeling—almost feeling guilty for everything that had happened. But the truth is, he didn’t really feel guilty about anything.
Hagios was an Arterian, a native of Arta, a planet slightly smaller than Jupiter, located in the Sorien solar system, in the Andromeda galaxy. Arta has a smaller sun than the one in the Milky Way and four moons. Being a large planet, it is also densely populated, and like Earth, faces many social and economic issues because of it. Coming from a poor background, Hagios sought a better life early on and worked for wealthy people in hopes of rising socially.
It was one of those jobs that eventually led him to Earth. He was a space tourism pilot, transporting the wealthiest Arterians back and forth to visit nearby planets, moons, or witness breathtaking nebulas up close. Although it was a peaceful and well-paid job, one day Hagios decided to rob all the passengers on his ship. He abandoned them in a jungle on the planet Ensuic, and bribed an engineer who worked on the construction of ships capable of chasing through wormholes. And that’s how Hagios, with the equivalent of 1 trillion in gold, ended up on Earth four years ago. And he had no regrets.
On Earth, he made numerous donations to poor communities, especially in Africa and South America. He helped everyone he could with the fortune he had. Hagios was able to do this because his planet’s currency was virtual, and his ship had technology that could convert it into the local currency of any place on Earth. However, it was inevitable that such a large sum would be tracked, and the Arta police already knew where he was.
While on Earth, he visited beaches, forests, and dined in the finest restaurants. His favorite place in the world was Naples, Italy—he loved the joyful, loud people, the culture, and the Italian language sounded like music to his ears. He also liked Naples because it reminded him of many poor cities on his own planet—even the place he was born. He felt sad to leave Earth, but knew he had made the most of it and lived a life he never could have dreamed of on his home planet. He also felt sorrow thinking of how many people like him existed on Earth—people who would never get the chance to experience the best a world has to offer.
Hagios was a thief—no doubt about it—and what he did was wrong. But Hagios just wanted to know what it felt like to live without limits. And now, he would spend the rest of his life in prison for it.

‘’Obrigado… qual o nome do gato?’’
‘’Ah?
This story sounded more like an adventure for me. Ranging from citing a cat's shadow to eating fortune cookies.
Your story was interesting. well done
Thank you, I'm glad that you like it.
This is actually a rich, deep story ... a man doomed to pay a lifetime price for living an interstellar life that most would never have dared ... yes, he is a thief and there is no excusing that, but he is much more than that! Good job!
Thank you for your review! Yeah, I also feel that he is more than a thief.
I really enjoyed reading your story. The idea of a migrant alien who chooses Earth to enjoy its beauty is very interesting. The reflection of Hagios makes us think about how we live our lives and whether it is worth it or not.
Thanks for sharing your story with us.
Good day.
Thank you for this beautiful comment. When I thought about how Hagios would be, the same idea came to my mind. It's good that you like it. (:

Crime doesn't pay. I enjoyed reading this imaginative world in the far future. Hagios didn't know that there are no short-cuts in life.
I like the concise yet informative way that you go about providing this background information. You provide enough detail for us to formulate an idea of the key elements of the plot while adding richness to the world.
Thank you very much, I'm happy to read this because I really write out of passion. In this specific case, my strategy was to enrich the story with information because I didn't intend to make the story any longer. So I needed to summarize what had happened for him to end up on Earth, but in a minimally interesting way.
