Have you ever stopped to think that the giant, leafy tree in front of your house, in your neighborhood, or in the park you visit was once smaller than your fingernail? Of course, we know from school that something so imposing could come from a small seed, but when you fully comprehend that natural process, you are amazed. They weren't that big their whole lives; they were as small and defenseless as we are. Sometimes I find that hard to believe.

¿Alguna vez te has parado a pensar en que ese árbol gigante y frondoso que está frente a tu casa, vecindario o en el parque que visitas fue más pequeño que tu uña? Como algo tan imponente pudo salir de una pequeña semilla, claro, lo sabemos desde la escuela, pero ese instante en que asimilas por completo ese proceso natural, quedas asombrado, ellos no fueron así de grandes toda su vida, ellos fueron tan pequeños e indefensos como nosotros, a veces eso me cuesta creerlo.

That “moment” I'm talking about happened to me recently, and that's what I want to tell you about. For about two months now, my Saturday morning routine has been to go to a nursery. I first did it as part of my community service, and for the last three Saturdays, I've been doing it on my own, as it's the closest thing to volunteering.

Ese “instante” del que les hablo, me sucedió hace poco, y sobre eso es que quiero contarles. Desde hace unos dos meses, mi rutina matutina sabatina consiste en asistir a un vivero, primero lo hice como parte de mi servicio comunitario y, desde hace unos 3 sábados por voluntad propia, es lo más cercano a un voluntariado.

And if you ask me what's so special about it, well, it's everything, I swear. These are some of my most special mornings, and believe me when I say that I love to sleep, especially in the morning. It's my most restful time, which is why I hate getting up early, and yet I get up to go to the nursery.

Y si me preguntan qué tiene de especial, pues, es que lo tiene todo, se los juro, son de mis mañanas más especiales, y créanme cuando les digo que me encanta dormir, sobre todo en la mañana, es mi momento de mayor descanso por eso, odio levantarme temprano y, aun así, me levanto para ir al vivero.

Last Saturday we planted 93 oak trees, thin sticks with a single leaf, which no one unfamiliar with the subject would think would end up being these beautiful, leafy trees. Did you know that they are one of the best types of trees to plant on streets and sidewalks? Because, 1. Their stems are not very thick, 2. They have many leaves and therefore provide a lot of shade, 3. They are not trees with many roots, or at least not those giant, extensive roots that will lift and break all the sidewalks (if you are Venezuelan, you know what I'm talking about, and if you don't, congratulations on your country's urban planning).

El sábado pasado sembramos 93 robles, unos palitos finitos con una sola hojita, que nadie que no conozca del tema pensaría que terminan siendo estos árboles hermosos y frondosos. ¿Sabías que son de los mejores tipos de árboles para sembrar en las calles y aceras? Debido a que, 1. Su tallo no es muy grueso, 2. Tienen muchas hojitas por ende dan mucha sombra 3. No son árboles que tienen muchas raíces, o al menos de esas gigantes y extensas que van a levantar y romper todas las aceras (si eres venezolano sabrás de qué hablo, y si no sabes, que buena la planificación urbana de tu país).

And why so many oak trees, Aimara? Are trees planted in nurseries? Well, the nursery where I help out on Saturdays is a municipal nursery, not a commercial one. Many of the species that are planted and cared for are for reforesting certain areas of Caracas, and well, you can never have too many trees. The truth is that not all of them will grow; it's a matter of natural selection. Not all of them survive, even if they are in the same conditions.

¿Y para qué tantos robles, Aimara? ¿En los viveros se siembran árboles? Bueno, el vivero en el que ayudo los sábados, es un vivero municipal, no es comercial, muchas de las especies que se plantan y cuidan son para reforestar algunos espacios de Caracas, y bueno, los árboles nunca están de más. La verdad es que no todos van a crecer, es un tema de la selección natural, no todos sobreviven aunque estén en las mismas condiciones.

These oak trees will grow and be transplanted into larger bags and bottles until they are finally tall enough to be planted permanently in a space where they can finish growing.

Estos robles van a ir creciendo y se irán trasplantando en bolsas y botellas más grandes hasta que por fin tengan la altura suficiente para ser sembrados de manera definitiva en un espacio donde puedan terminar de crecer.

Honestly, I don't think I'll be able to keep track of them until I get to see some of them in their full glory in about 15 years, but while I'm helping out at the nursery, I'll do everything in my power to care for them and help them grow. In this world where everything is immediate, it's a good exercise in patience, that's the real “all in good time.”

Honestamente, no creo que pueda seguirles la pista hasta llegar a ver alguno de ellos en su gran esplendor dentro de unos 15 años, pero mientras este ayudando en el vivero haré todo lo que esté en mi alcance para cuidarlos y ayudarlos a crecer. En este mundo donde todo es la inmediatez, es un buen ejercicio para trabajar la paciencia, ese es el verdadero “todo a su tiempo”.

Finally, I wanted to show you this beauty. It's a seedling, which is what we call a plant when it's in its early stages of growth. Since we're surrounded by trees, we sometimes get a lot of seedlings, so we collect them and plant them in a small pot or bag so they can grow. In this case, it's an Araguaney. Do you know it? Did you imagine that it looked like this at first?

Por último, quería mostrarles esta belleza, es una plántula, así se les dice a la planta cuando está en sus primeras fases de crecimiento, como estamos rodeados de árboles, a veces conseguimos muchas plántulas, así que las recolectamos y las sembramos en un vasito o en una bolsita para que crezca. En este caso es un Araguaney, ¿lo conocen? ¿Se imaginaban que al principio era así?
