You have definitely not been watching so many romance movies but what if next year comes and still didn't work out the way as planned?
If he can still reapply this year, it wouldn't be bad, but if it doesn't affect him in any way financially regardless, then it's better

I'm sure by next year everything could go as planned for him because it seems like things were rushed this year. But if it doesn't happen, then he will have to deal with the consequences of his actions.
