Was watching a movie, #24, about a Norwegian resistance fighter in WWII. In the movie he speaks to a group of young people. He asks them if they feel secure. They do. Then he says something startling. "I felt secure. And then I was not".

It happens that fast. People are lulled into thinking that what they have, their freedoms, are guaranteed. This is not the first country in which people are careless with their hard-won freedom. I hope we don't suffer the fate of so many others. It looks inevitable. The institutions of government are now in service of someone who knows how to use them.

I’ve been meaning to watch that movie. My dad lived through the Nazi occupation of Norway. His parents were peripherally involved in helping Jews get over the border into Sweden. Unfortunately, like many of his generation, he didn’t talk much about the war years.

I was born in '47, so I grew up in the shadow of WWII. I used to have nightmares about airplanes strafing me in my bed, and Nazis storming my door. Too bad your father didn't share more. But, my husband was in Vietnam and it's only in recent years that he's opening up about it.

Precious stories, from your father and my husband.
