Hola, mis amigos de Daily Blog. Vengo hoy a compartir la culminación de una etapa importante de mi vida: El sábado fue la graduación del XXVI Curso Onelio de Técnicas Narrativas. 🥳🥳🥳🎊🎉

"El Onelio", como llamamos cariñosamente al curso, es único en Cuba. Por acá tenemos todavía muy arraigados atavismos románticos como la idea de que la escritura no requiere estudios académicos y que escribir es un arte solitario, en plan: sales del vientre de tu madre con una pluma de ganso en la mano derecha y una vela encendida en la izquierda y te elevas hasta lo alto de una torre de marfil donde permanecerás el resto de tu vida encerrado con las musas eyectando en las noches divinales pensamientos que serán recogidos para la posteridad en pergaminos iluminados con pan de oro. Y otra cosa: todo cuanto escribes es sagrado, tus lectores (cuando son colegas) deben andar en puntas de pies alrededor de cada letra de un borrador tuyo, porque cualquier tenue crítica podría destrozar irremediablemente tu ruboroso ego.

El resultado de tales atavismos es que muchísima gente sabia e, incluso, bienintencionada, te desaconseja con energía que apliques para el curso (o cualquier curso o talleres literarios). Confesar que tu musa lleva batería es anatema en muchas partes. A mí, en un buen taller literario, me dijeron que "estaba seca" por pedir ideas para escribir una novela (pedí una premisa, algo que se hace constantemente en ejercicios de escritura creativa y hasta en algunos concursos); otras veces he visto cómo escritores profesionales incitaban a principiantes sin ninguna base teórica a escribir varias cuartillas a diario —aunque no estuvieran inspirados—, forzando su creatividad cuando todavía no pueden producir una obra de calidad por ausencia de los recursos básicos del oficio, incluídos conocimientos de redacción. Menos mal que, diabla vieja, muy pronto fui capaz de discernir que la disciplina mal encaminada lo que produce es daños, no estructura. Tengo la teoría de que los escritores principiantes somos como deportistas de alto rendimiento: un entrenamiento bien pensado —incluidos los períodos de descanso adecuados— saca lo mejor de nosotros, mientras que una ejercitación aleatoria (sobreescribir, aislarse, asumir ciegamente todas las críticas, obsesionarse con los borradores...) solo lleva a la desesperación y autolesionarse. El final de semejante camino se llama bloqueo de escritor.

Pero volvamos al curso. Yo llegué al Onelio después de 2 años metiéndome en cuanto curso y/o conferencia gratuita encontré por ahí. Previo a eso, tuve 35 años para hacer todas las cosas mal. Leo desde los 7 años y escribo desde los 11, de modo que a mis 52 he pasado por muchas de las peores etapas posibles de una vocación sin guía. Fue en el taller literario Espacio Abierto donde comencé a ver la luz hace como 5 años. Asimilar todos esos cursillos introductorios previos, fue lo que me permitió disfrutar cada una de las clases del Onelio, incluso aquellas en las que vi a condiscípulos aburrirse.

Grupo magnífico, amigas y amigos que, de verdad lo espero, consigan sobrevivir a la prueba del tiempo. ¿Y qué decir de los profesores? Hablo por todos nosotros, creo, cuando digo que el gran reproche que podemos hacerles es que no hubieran más clases. Ha terminado el curso, tenemos ya el ansiado diploma, pero yo regresaría ahora mismo a esa aula a empezar todo de nuevo.

"El Onelio," as we affectionately call the course, is unique in Cuba. Around here, we still have very deep-rooted romantic atavisms like the idea that writing doesn't require academic study and that writing is a solitary art, something like: you emerge from your mother's womb with a goose quill in your right hand and a lit candle in your left and you rise to the top of an ivory tower where you will remain for the rest of your life locked away with the muses, ejecting on divine nights thoughts that will be collected for posterity on parchment illuminated with gold leaf. And another thing: everything you write is sacred, your readers (when they are colleagues) must tiptoe around every letter of your draft because any faint criticism could irreparably shatter your blushing ego.

The result of such atavisms is that many wise and even well-intentioned people strongly advise you against applying for the course (or any literary course or workshop). Confessing that your muse runs on batteries is anathema in many places. I was once told in a supposedly good literary workshop that I was "dried up" for asking for ideas to write a novel (I asked for a premise, something that is constantly done in creative writing exercises and even in some contests); other times I've seen how professional writers encouraged beginners with no theoretical foundation to write several pages daily—even when uninspired—forcing their creativity when they still can't produce quality work due to a lack of the basic tools of the trade, including knowledge of composition. Thankfully, old devil that I am, I was soon able to discern that misdirected discipline produces damage, not structure. I have a theory that beginner writers are like high-performance athletes: a well-thought-out training plan—including adequate rest periods—brings out the best in us, while random exercise (overwriting, isolating oneself, blindly accepting all criticism, obsessing over drafts...) only leads to desperation and self-harm. The end of such a road is called writer's block.

But let's get back to the course. I arrived at the Onelio after 2 years of getting into every free course and/or lecture I found out there. Prior to that, I had 35 years to do everything wrong. I've been reading since I was 7 and writing since I was 11, so at 52, I've been through many of the worst possible stages of an unguided vocation. It was in the "Espacio Abierto" literary workshop where I began to see the light about 5 years ago. Absorbing all those prior introductory short courses was what allowed me to enjoy every single class of the Onelio, even those where I saw classmates get bored.

A magnificent group, friends who I truly hope manage to survive the test of time. And what to say about the professors? I speak for all of us, I think, when I say that the biggest reproach we can make is that there weren't more classes. The course has ended, we already have the longed-for diploma, but I would return right now to that classroom to start all over again.
