My First Experience on a Plane

Source

I still remember the mix of excitement and nervousness I felt on the day of my first flight. It was a short trip from Lagos to Abuja, but to me, it felt like a journey to another world. I had seen planes in movies and watched them soar high in the sky, but I never imagined I would actually be inside one until its actually happens.

The Airport Chaos The day started early. My heart was pounding as we arrived at the airport. The place was crowded people rushing, announcements blaring, and long lines everywhere. I held my travel documents tightly, afraid I might lose them. The check-in process was confusing at first, but with the help of the airline staff, I got my boarding pass.

Security checks were another new experience. I had to remove my belt, shoes, and even my watch before walking through a scanner. It felt strange, but I understood it was for safety. After security, we waited at the departure lounge. Through the large glass windows, I could see planes landing and taking off. My stomach fluttered soon, I would be on one of them.

Boarding the Plane When boarding was announced, I followed the line of passengers, my boarding pass clutched in my sweaty hands. Walking through the tunnel (which I later learned was called a "jet bridge"), I finally stepped into the plane. The first thing I noticed was how narrow the aisle was. The seats were small but looked comfortable. A friendly flight attendant greeted me and guided me to my seat.

I sat by the window I wanted to see everything. The cabin was clean, and the smell was different, like a mix of fresh air and something I couldn’t quite place. I fastened my seatbelt, listening carefully to the safety instructions, even though I had no idea what half the things meant.

Takeoff, The Scariest (and Most Exciting) Part The engines roared to life, and the plane started moving. My grip on the armrest tightened as we taxied to the runway. The pilot’s voice came over the speakers, announcing we were about to take off. My heart raced.

Then, the plane sped up faster and faster until suddenly, the ground fell away. My stomach dropped, and for a second, I felt weightless. I pressed my face against the window, watching the buildings and cars shrink below us. The fear slowly turned into wonder as we climbed higher. The sky was a bright blue, and fluffy clouds floated beneath us like cotton candy. It was magical, i could not believe that am seeing with my eyes but its real.

In the Air Once we leveled off, I relaxed a little. The flight attendants served snacks and drinks. I sipped on a cup of juice, still amazed that I was drinking it thousands of feet in the air. I tried to peek into the cockpit (just out of curiosity), but the door was closed.

Looking outside, the world seemed so small. Roads looked like thin lines, and houses looked like tiny toys. I took pictures, even though I knew they wouldn’t capture how incredible it felt. The hum of the engines was soothing, and after a while, I almost forgot I was on a plane until we hit a little turbulence.

The plane shook slightly, and my panic returned. But the passengers around me seemed calm, so I tried to stay relaxed. The flight attendant noticed my nervous look and smiled, saying, "Just a little bump it’s normal." That helped ease my fear.

Landing, A Smooth End Before I knew it, the pilot announced we were preparing to land. The descent felt strange my ears popped, and the ground rushed up to meet us. I held my breath as the wheels touched down with a slight bump. The plane slowed, and everyone clapped (I later learned this was a common thing for some passengers).

Walking out of the plane, I felt proud of myself. What had seemed scary at first turned into an amazing adventure. The whole experience lasted less than an hour, but the memory stayed with me forever.

Final Thoughts My first flight taught me that new experiences can be frightening, but they’re also exciting. If I had let fear stop me, I would have missed the incredible feeling of flying above the clouds. Now, every time I see a plane in the sky, I smile, remembering that day, the day I conquered my fear and discovered the joy of flying.

Would I fly again? Absolutely! In fact, I can’t wait for my next trip, i already wish myself another experience but this time around not local but international travel.
