The Social Effect Of Cancel Culture

Source
The use of social media has become so prominent in our society. Many use it as a tool of public awareness to address issues within the society. When you check online you notice people expressing their various views about issues happening within the country.

Many have turned their social media handle as a tool for voicing out their opinions either positively or negatively. The act of Cancel culture is now becoming a norm day by day within the society.

The act of cancel culture is a way of calling out celebrities and influential personalities in the social media space to condemn and lash them for any of their wrongdoings. As we all know social media is a public place where everyone feels they can express themselves the way they like without considering the mental state of the person involved.

In Nigeria, Cancel culture is more of dragging the public figure involved on the social media space. It becomes a trending topic that both young and adults comment on. We've seen a lot of public figures whom their social image has been trampled on as a result of cancel culture.

The truth is that does who are lashing out at them are not much better than these public figures who did wrong but because they are celebrities, people expect them to always do things right. Most times much of the news is not true but because the people involved are public figures, people are always quick to judge and drag them on various social media handles.

Recently in Nigeria, A citizen of Nigeria made an allegation against a popular food company. The review spread like fire on the social media space and people started supporting the negative allegation against the food company whereas everything said was all false allegation.

I discovered one thing on social media space, People don't wait patiently to verify news before it's been circulated, as long as the person involved is a public figure, it spreads around with serious backlash and negative comments. Note, I'm not in support of wrongdoing by public figures but I believe issues related to public figures can be handled legally not by dragging or trolling them on social media platforms.

Issues related to cancel culture have caused trauma and mental depression to public figures who are involved. Not only does it affect the individual involved but also has a negative stigma on their friends and relatives. As a result of trolling and lashing out by the public, Many public figures careers and social status have been destroyed.

Another reason why I against cancel culture is because it can cause revolt and strife within a country. Much of this has led to massive protests which resulted in the loss of lives and and properties.

In conclusion, Cancel culture is not a good trend due to its numerous disadvantages. I will advise a legal action should be taken against public figures who do wrong. The act of cancel culture should be discouraged, this will assist in keeping the sanity of the social media space.

Cancel culture can literally ruin a person's self esteem and mental health, it's not easy to have the world be at war with you.
