READING COMPETITION

Competition is a very good thing especially when it comes to schooling. When we have what we call healthy competition, it helps in bringing growth to our lives. Actually I don't think that we are supposed to be having unhealthy competition. I truly believe that when competition was introduced, it was meant to help us grow in any aspect of life that we want. But because we have people with wrong mindset, they started introducing unhealthy competition.

For this week I will be sharing with us a healthy competition that I organized and it really brought something good out of my pupils. In 2018 when I was still schooling in Nasarawa state college of education Akwanga. After our last semester for NCE 2, We were all posted to go and practice what we were taught in different schools. Though we were given the opportunity to choose which ever school we want to go to. I decided that I want to go to one of the best primary school in Akwanga because I really needed a place where I will be challenged to do more.

I was meant to spend six months there which was going to cover two team with the kids. When I went there first I made up my mind that I was going to do something that will live a good name for me in that school before living. I was posted to teach primary two and one English language. When I got to primary two I discovered that some of them can't read and is affecting them academically. I sat some of them down and discuss with them if they will want me to organize something for them that will help them know how to read and they all agreed that I should go ahead.

HEALTH COMPETITION

Because I saw the zeal in them to learn I organized a reading competition for them with a very good promise that I was ready to fulfill my own part if they do well. I used their primary two English text book and selected some passages for them to start reading at home. Normally they are not allowed to go home with the book, but I pleaded on their behalf and the school allowed them to go home with their English text book every day for the period of time I gave them.

We started and I make sure to check on their progress everyday during break. Before we get to one month I noticed that some of them were beginning to read and some are still lacking behind. I came with my gift of books and pen to give to my three best and the reading competition continued. I did that so that I can ginger those who were not too serious with the competition. By the time we got to the second month most of the pupils were already reading and expecting their gifts. I knew that I was in trouble at that time because I promised to get them gift if they can read very well. I had to get money and buy gift for all the students that can read and before long parents start coming to school to appreciate us for helping their kids learn to read and write.

KEEPING A BALANCE
I never allowed the pupils to laugh at those one who can not read. The essence is to help them read and write and nothing more. Every one was happy at the end of the competition because I brought them in front of the class to reward them.

Thanks for stopping by. Please 🙏 do drop your comment at the comment section.

In school competition is what helped a lot of us take our studies seriously, it pushed us and compelled us to do the right thing.
