Made in Abyss/ Tenderness and darkness in one place

A few days ago, while browsing TikTok, a scene from an anime appeared among the views. As it caught my attention, I decided to look it up right away and give it a try; I didn't know what it was really about, but I liked the animation and noticed that beneath its apparent cuteness, I could find some dark elements and an interesting plot.

Made in Abyss

This anime focuses on Riko and Reg's journey to the bottom of the abyss, which is nothing more than a vast mysterious pit, filled with unusual creatures, ancient relics, and unique ecosystems in each of its seven strata.
Riko is a girl who lives in the orphanage in the city that was founded around the top of the abyss. In this institution, she is educated alongside other children as an apprentice cave raider, who are the ones who venture into the abyss, explore it, and rescue relics, and whose ranks range from red whistles to white whistles.

Riko, the daughter of a legendary explorer who remains inside the abyss, one day, during an expedition, finds a cyborg boy who has lost his memory, whom she names Reg, who apparently comes from the bottom of the abyss.
After receiving a letter from her mother, Riko decides to escape and venture into the abyss to search for her mother. Reg joins her and accompanies her, and so they begin their descent to the bottom of the abyss.

Now, as for the strengths of the anime, one of them is undoubtedly its animation; it is beautiful, colorful, tender, and although seemingly childish in its illustration (characters with huge super kawaii eyes), it can present us with raw moments, dangerous places, and characters.
The plot is original, as they created a whole world around the abyss around which a city grew; its ecosystem is unique in each stratum, the characters are unique, each with virtues, flaws, pasts, and more that they let us see without filters, and in addition, this whole world of exploration is interesting, because the deeper they go into the abyss, the more we see how beautiful and dangerous it can be, and we want to know more about this place and what is hidden there.

There are charming characters, others who are exasperating, and those who terrify us because of what they are capable of doing. This anime reminds us that human beings are often capable of anything to get what we want, turning us into unscrupulous beings.
Likewise, there are all kinds of characters, that is, we don't just see humans and creatures from the abyss; there are others, but I won't give too many details, because if you haven't seen this anime, I hope it makes you curious and encourages you to watch it.
As for the music, it's lovely; the opening and ending themes are very good and are accompanied by excellent animations that I loved watching.

Currently, this anime has only two seasons and a few movies, some of which compile or show us episodes from the first season in sequence (Movie 1: Dawn of the Journey and Movie 2: Wandering Twilight); in addition, the third movie must be seen before the second season or you won't understand anything. In this case, the order would be: Season 1, Movie 3: Dawn of the Deep Soul, and Season 2. I understand that there are two specials, which are optional: Marulk's Daily Life and Together with Dad.
In short, this anime based on a manga series of the same name is a gem, and all of us who have seen it are eagerly awaiting the return of the rest of its content to the screens; according to my research, it will return in a movie. To conclude, in my opinion, Made In Abyss deserves an 8.5/10.

Made in Abbys

I also fell for the cute, "chibi" art style, thinking it would be a peaceful, Ghibli-esque adventure, and then… well, the trauma is real 😅.
I totally agree with you that the world-building is fascinating; that blend of visual beauty with the absolute cruelty of the abyss ecosystem keeps you glued to the screen. Excellent review! I hope we get news of the sequel soon, because the wait is agonizing.
We all fell for that adorable chibi style, and now, despite the trauma of what we saw, we want to keep watching the anime. For me, the hardest part so far was seeing what happened to Pruska.
