Religión en el Siglo XXI: Porcentaje de Creencias en Canarias, España, Venezuela y América🌐🕊️ [ESP-ENG]

Desde que llegué a Tenerife ha sido difícil no notar algo en particular respecto a la cultura de las Islas Canarias. La religión católica domina en el número de personas que se adhieren a sus creencias y también domina de lejos en cuanto a la arquitectura urbana religiosa. Más abajo les muestro unas estadísticas en tablas que lo confirman. Sé que esto en Latinoamérica suele ser también así, pero al menos en Venezuela, desde mi experiencia, esos números no se ven o reflejan tanto como lo que yo he visto aquí en Tenerife.

Since arriving in Tenerife it has been hard not to notice something particular about the culture of the Canary Islands. The Catholic religion dominates in the number of people who adhere to its beliefs and it also dominates by far in terms of religious urban architecture. Below I show you some statistics in tables that confirm this. I know that this is usually the case in Latin America as well, but at least in Venezuela, from my experience, those numbers are not seen or reflected as much as what I have seen here in Tenerife.

En segundo lugar en las Islas Canarias se encuentra el ateísmo, pero muy de lejos con sólo 8%. No sé que tan acertadas sean estas estadísticas, pero según mi apreciación estando aquí, quizás los más jóvenes hagan que ese 77% se reduzca a al menos 60%. Tras ser un país mayoritariamente católico, cada vez más personas en España se han vuelto no creyentes en las últimas décadas, como se ve en la tabla de abajo.

No podía dejar de mencionar también el hecho de que la masonería jugó un papel importante en España a principios del siglo pasado, siendo en Tenerife donde se encuentra el templo masónico más grande de España, como ya les compartí en una publicación anterior. Esto también sucedió en Latinoamérica. Hoy en día, el catolicismo sigue teniendo un fuerte arraigo cultural en Canarias y es un rasgo común con nuestros países de origen.

I could not fail to mention also the fact that Freemasonry played an important role in Spain at the beginning of the last century, being in Tenerife where the largest Masonic temple in Spain is located, as I already shared with you in a previous post. This also happened in Latin America. Today, Catholicism continues to have strong cultural roots in the Canary Islands and is a common trait with our countries of origin.

En toda España sucede algo un poco diferente. Aunque el catolicismo sigue siendo la religión dominante, hay cada vez mayor presencia de ateísmo, agnosticismo y no creyentes. Tras haber sido un reino católico por un buen tiempo en la historia, ahora hay un panorama un poco diferente. Con la inmgración, otras religiones han crecido también, especialmente el Islam. Históricamente, el judaísmo también tuvo presencia importante en España (Sefardíes), de los cuales una buena cantidad emigró a Latinoamérica.

Something a little different is happening throughout Spain. Although Catholicism is still the dominant religion, there is a growing presence of atheism, agnosticism, and non-believers. En nuestro país sucede algo interesante en comparación a España, y lo mismo sucede en prácticamente toda América Latina. Cada vez hay mayor porcentaje de cristianos protestantes, popularmente más conocidos como evangélicos. No sé porqué ha sucedido esto allí y no en España, quizás por la mayor influencia de la cultura anglo-estadounidense. Lo que sí parece ser cierto es que en nuestros países se prefiere más cambiar de religión que abandonarlas, ser ateo o agnóstico.

In our country, something interesting is happening in comparison to Spain, and the same happens in practically all of Latin America. There is an increasing percentage of Protestant Christians, popularly known as Evangelicals. I do not know why this has happened there and not in Spain, perhaps because of the greater influence of Anglo-American culture. What does seem to be true is that in our countries people prefer to change religion rather than abandon it, to be atheist or agnostic.

En Estados Unidos la tendencia es al contrario que en América Latina. El protestatismo es más difundido que el catolicismo, quizás por la influencia inglesa existente desde los tiempos de la colonia, al igual que España con Hispanoamérica. Los ingleses llevaron a América prácticamente toda la influencia de los tiempos de las reformas religiosas durante la época de Lutero. Al mismo tiempo, los mormones y los judíos aparecen como minorías importantes, estos últimos especialmete por ser la religión de personajes famosos y muy conocidos dentro de la cultura estadounidense y europea, a pesar de no ser un porcentaje alto.

Quizás lo más importante es saber el efecto de esto como seres humanos en sociedad, y si es positivo o no que cada vez más personas tengan creencias cada vez menos religiosas o simplemente no crean. Es un punto interesante en la historia humana. Les comparto esta reflexión y estadísticas junto a algunas fotografías de edificios religiosos de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

In the United States the tendency is the opposite of Latin America. Protestantism is more widespread than Catholicism, perhaps because of the English influence that has existed since colonial times, just as Spain has with Spanish America. The English brought to America practically all the influence of the times of the religious reforms during Luther's time. At the same time, the Mormons and the Jews appear as important minorities, the latter especially for being the religion of famous and well known characters within the American and European culture, in spite of not being a high percentage.

Perhaps the most important thing is to know the effect of this as human beings in society, and whether it is positive or not that more and more people have less and less religious beliefs or simply do not believe.
