Onboarding thoughts and plans
For those of you new or not aware, in @ocd we have an active onboarding initiative ongoing which is quite unique in a way to other onboarding attempts but it has shown quite some decent results over the years. Let me start off with this screenshot of a website/tool created by @spiritsurge:

One thing to keep in mind is that the @ocdb onboardees aren't part of the onboarding initiative, that account is simply offering free account credits to @hiveonboard which is used by a handful of front-ends and dapps (@peakd being one of them) and has some restrictions and limitations along with abuse-filters. I also need to mention that I don't know why the retention rate is so high there looking at "Retention by Activity" at 22.8%. Maybe cause other ones get abused more heavily and hiveonboard isn't displayed on the https://signup.hive.io/ page, thus mainly used naturally through @peakd, unsure.
What I am sure of however, is that @ocd's account creations are mainly for our onboarding project.
The main difference of our onboarding inititive compared to others is that onboarders take their time to "guide" people about hive. Whether this happens 1 on 1, through webinars, conferences, seminars, etc, there's more effort and guidance involved here so the directly onboarded users are more aware of what awaits them, what to do, what not to do, etc. Some may still do what they shouldn't be doing, but that's life I suppose and for that we have anti-abuse measures in place getting paid by the DHF to find and counter these instances of abuse such as hivewatchers (even though at times it feels like they get paid to complain about us not noticing abuse on our own).
When we look for onboarders, we make sure they're active accounts and have been on hive longer. Some times there are people who try to sign up for an onboarder position while still being new to hive or barely being active at all themselves (no active posts/comments/curation). The position as an onboarder comes with a lot of trust and there should be room for "consequences" if they purposely abuse their position, such as ruining their reputation on chain or facing downvotes if they've maliciously been onboarding fake users/alt accounts, etc since in their position they can also nominate posts of new users for curation.
Thus, our acceptance requirements are a bit stricter.
We also look at geolocation, someone wanting to onboard people from quite a random place that there's not many of on here may find it harder to retent those users and the effects may not be as great for the onboarding attempts or for those users to find "their people" on here which helps retention. If the onboarder qualifies in other ways however we always give them the chance anyway but we do prefer onboarders who are from the "high focus geolocations" that already are present on hive, think venezuela, ghana, nigeria, philippines, indonesia, etc.
The idea there of course is that if you're getting somewhere new, especially on a social media platform, you're more likely to stick around if you see/find people you may already know or you have an easier time getting to know and build a connection with. We hope that this could at some point cause some form of a ripple effect where say a big amount of users from the same town/city happen to be on hive and they go out and start onboarding users on their own rather than through an onboarding initiative.
Something that needs to be said and is also important are initiatives like #spendhbd, if we start seeing a lot of users from the same place on hive, it'd make sense if they started onboarding merchants to accept hbd/hive since many users would be more likely to spend their rewards directly rather than going through unnecessary fees and hoops to convert to fiat.
Another thing that's important to note is that all these activities and initiatives are made possible with small author rewards through compilation posts through @ocdb and beneficiary settings that hiveonboard places. While it isn't much, it's a little something for those spending countless hours attempting to onboard users to hive. I share this post as well where we take a deeper look at our onboarding stats with the help of @hivetrending fetching the data.
The plans from my side would be that eventually we could maybe start sweetening the deal up a bit more with additional reward pool generated rewards to incentivize a focus on onboarding even more than it is currently, where most onboarders are just doing it for fun rather than for the rewards. These plans would also be to focus on the same locations as most of our previous onboarding and to then maybe also tackle some unique new "marketing" approaches that'd go hand in hand with the previous onboarding activities. I'll talk abit more about this later as this post already got quite long.
If you're an experienced and active hiver who knows how this place works and you feel like you have a lot of people you know that you'd wanna invite to hive, feel free to apply for an onboarder role in our discord and test things out. Even if you only end up onboarding a few people, odds are some of them may stick around for the long term looking at our statistics.
If you have some ideas that'd make our onboarding activities more efficient or if you generally would like to help with retention/curation of these users, we can guide you in the right way of where to look and appreciate you spending your time for the growth of the userbase on chain!
Thanks for reading.
I sincerely think the way to go is doing workshops. I really do, not to say its easy to do, but if you are looking for impact, that has to be the way.
Recently I spoke with Matt about this idea I have. I don't know if I will get rejected, but its worth a try. I'm going to talk to the Prefect (it's like a mini mayor) and offer her my services for free. That is how I'm going to word it. I want to teach people how they can reclaim their online sovereignty and save money along the way.
If she agrees, then I'm going to spend 300 to 400 bucks making the thing happen. Getting some catering, requesting the space in the town hall, buying some NFC cards to hand out with 5 bucks each, that sort of thing.
And then... We gotta put up a good show, so to speak. I would have to ask my wife and at least @jersont to help me, and offer to compensate people who help for their time as well. But, the retention, now that we have 11 businesses locally accepting HBD, should be easier. (in theory)
So, although I think online recruiting is great and all, I think little clusters of Hive, economic hubs, are the way to really make this grow.
But it starts with one politician opening the door... that is the hard part. lol
I can see that working, what is it you need from the mayor, though? Like how do they make it easier?
The thing with checkinwith app is good to get people accounts but I've yet to see much retention there, I've even offered curation work if they were to follow the accounts they create so I can go through the list when they post, but it doesn't seem like many if any do, I just earlier sent eddie another message to double-check if things are working there from their end.
My point is, just getting people accounts and hoping they'll figure it out does not seem like it does much. Such as at conferences or where they've been onboarding people with the app. It does feel like guidance and some info is required which onboarders have been able to provide through seminars/webinars, etc, that I mentioned in the post, or directly chatting/talking with them 1 on 1. Curation retention obviously helps along the way so they can see they're already getting some value for their time while at the same time distributing inflation to more unique users.
Access to public spaces: a ballroom, a plaza, townhall. Maybe tables, chairs and electricity. Hey, if you can get a free venue, why not?
Of course restaurants and pubs will also be glad to have your event in exchange for some sales.
just woke up, I was going to answer Acid, but you got it! hahaha
If you need help with account credits or referral links, let me know and I can hook you up to our onboarding initiative. It uses hiveonboard but bypasses sms verification, some times there's some weird IP bans however that may block certain users from creating an account.
much obliged brother... I've been collecting ACTs, but I might run out. Besides, using your onboarding might be better for curation/retention too. I'll reach out if I get a green light.
it'd be easier for us to find them yeh, some times i notice your reblogs but got a lot going on
Nice, let me know if I can throw some crackers or dips your way for that. Might be good publicity for Pandala, too, and you could hand out some "Free Shipping" cards for Pandala products, which people could pay with HBD.Well, depending on how the trial package that is definitely not a bomb arrives tomorrow.
I still don't feel knowledgeable enough to hold that here, but if you ever come our direction, we can plan an event like that at the bakery-café, and see how it turns out. If I haven't converted the town before that.

I love this, it would be a good introduction for interested users. Everyone deserves the opportunity to receive proper instruction.
I didn't know there are so many onboarders and even for the first time to see @appreciator doing onboarding with such a high retention rate ? OCD has certainly been a stable initiative running for long time. but I still feel, rewards are not very high for onboarders, may be improve that ?
Appreciator creates accounts for @ecency, so that's mainly ecency's numbers you're looking at!
and yes, once posh is caught up on current contests to sharers, etc, we may use some of those extra funds generated there for onboarders.
I really appreciate the thoughtfulness behind this initiative. Personalised guidance makes such a difference for new users finding their way. Plus, it's so much easier than it's been for us!
I like that OCD focuses on proper guidance instead of just signing people up. Also, wanna know that do u track how many onboarded users become active curators or community leaders?
we have a few that became onboarders themselves but that's not really our focus at this time.
The stats looks cool, I love that the onboarding initiative has about 44% of users still active with decent HP's..
Onboarders are doing pretty good although it takes allot of effort, time and consistency. It's actually fun educating people about Web3, how they can own their own accounts with no censorship to their contents etc. The initiative has broaden my understanding about Hive and I do appreciate your thoughts about sweetening the rewards for onboarders as well..
Peacee💙
An interesting thing to note is also that services with low retention are also that ones mainly abused by spammers, multi accounters for malicious purposes and such... While a minimum of check like on ocd is done gives better chances of onboard genuine users
I still think the best way to onboard would be web2, reddit would just ban anyone giving referral and such but Instagram and Facebook would be perfect to advertise hive and onboard
I also like @hivetrending initiative with pizza delegation, I hope some of who I referenced is still active 😅
I’ve onboarded quite a few people on Hive. At first, they were active, but eventually, they stopped. I even co-wrote some of their introductions just to get them started and had one-on-one calls with them daily. But in the end, I’m still here alone 😂.
Ah well, what to do. Doesn’t mean I’m going to give up though. I still think Hive is a great place to push our minds to achieve great heights.
After all, we can’t just lie our way through Hive since everything needs to be original. Anyway, I’m off-topic, but I do hope more users join Hive so we can see more new communities being created in the future.
feel free to apply as onboarder, maybe with some extra focused curation they may stick around a bit longer to learn more!
I see I might do just that thank you.
OCD is doing a great job in on-boarding and retention of newbies. That guidance is necessary as most people just pop into hive, do one or two wrong moves, and get into trouble because they lack the basic knowledge of what to do and what not to do.
Although some will still end up doing whatever they like even after training, but it is minimal.
Just as I got to know HIVE, I can say that: Sharing that it's a platform that involves earnings from writing, interacting and participating in the ecosystem is much better than complex things like explaining what HIVE is in crypto language.
Excellent friend, these are projects that require many committed people, this work is not easy.
It takes a lot of dedication to be an incorporator. Good luck with this great project.
It seems that your on boarding efforts are focused on bringing a lot of new users to Hive. That's great and should be done, but I think there might be a better way to bring more users via strategic on boarding of great bloggers. Hive is a blog and social networking site so wouldn't it make sense to on board people who can improve our quality of content overall? And they might bring new users through quality of their content or some of their existing readers... This would make much better investment long term than defensive Hive burn post upvotes...
As you can see, we're already looking for some small time creators who'd be willing to learn hive enough before getting sponsored and attempting to bring their audience in. I fear we'd need more funds for such attempts however, maybe a DHF proposal.
Well, if our whales were on board with upvoting those active content creators that you onboard instead of voting the burn posts you might not need a DHF proposal...
I love the initiative ! I wish I knew more people to onboard but most of the people I know that would be onboard-able are already here. ><
Happy to see a post like this from you; somehow, our effort is being seen. I am thankful that Im part of this program and the team, and Im Excited for the future plans of this onboarding program.
cool. I am not sure if I am an official onboarder or not,.. I don't think I am although I tried to sign up before. Anyway.. yea, onboarding sounds all good and I am talking to 2 ppl now that might decide to join hive. :)
Taking it slow and guiding the new people instead of just pushing signups is most definitely way more sustainable and a great approach especially if our intention is retaining them, the easier it gets to understand Hive for new comers the higher the chances they'll stick around
Congratulations @acidyo! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain And have been rewarded with New badge(s)

I think this type of initiative is excellent, and I think it is necessary to incentivize in some way those users who incorporate others, since it is a job that requires a lot of effort and dedication.
Adjusting rewards here due to some accounts overrewarding it.
Cool! Keep onboarding!
I love the fact that OCD is very intentional about onboarding and guiding those onboarded rightly.
Honestly , it takes a lot of time and energy to put newbies through on what they need to know here. It is more lovely to see them stick around for a long time, after putting in enough energy guiding them rightly.
Greetings. I'm glad these types of initiatives are being carried out. I'm excited that there are projects dedicated to promoting the incorporation and retention of new users. These types of activities should be more abundant on Hive. Anything that contributes and contributes is good.
Collaboration between different initiatives for the incorporation of new users, as well as a focus on education and guidance, can be fundamental to improving retention. It's essential to emphasize that joint efforts are required to keep these users engaged.
I deeply admire the efforts you are making to achieve this important goal. From my perspective, in the Spanish-speaking community, there are projects that are part of this initiative, small projects but no less important. I have witnessed the work of the @hispapro project, which I was part of, and we share that vision, which is focused on user retention, as we believe it is key for them to discover the true potential that Hive offers. Although our work is modest, it is aimed at promoting the active participation of these users in related communities. Providing them with support and tools to continue their journey at Hive is one of our top priorities. We're proud to see how, once they receive all the help they need to move forward, they forge their own path and spread their wings. Excuse my poetry, but that's what Hive does to me.
I understand the importance of what you're suggesting. And I'm amazed that there are projects of this nature because they seek what is common to all: "That Hive expands and reaches many more users," and that is wonderful.
It would be spectacular, essential, and necessary for more projects to commit to both the onboarding and retention, guidance, support, and follow-up of new users, with a trusted team capable of carrying out this mission, as you yourself express.
I wish you much success in this great project, which has served as an example for us, and for which, I repeat, we are very grateful.
