Burn Back Better
I’ve probably downed over three liters of liquid by now, and it’s only 17:22 where I’m at. That means the day’s not done, and I’ll likely have to chug even more, hopefully just water... Actually, it’ll definitely be water ‘cause I’m not feeling beer or anything else right now.
The thermometer—or whatever feeds our weather apps—is showing like 37 degrees Celsius right now, but the car I was driving at noon told a different story. It clocked 42 degrees Celsius when I was in town earlier.
I had to drive today ‘cause I borrowed a car from a friend after selling mine. Of course, the second I got it, I got a flat tire. Not my fault—the tire was already jacked up—but I was the lucky bastard stuck changing it.I’ve got mad respect for folks who can work in this heat. I rarely have to, since most of my work in this life’s been indoors. While I was out there swapping the tire, I spotted fire on a nearby hill, and where there’s fire, there’s smoke.
At one point, we saw the fire spread, burning like a motherfucker and catching some trees, not just the pasture that went up first.
We’ve had other hills nearby catch fire a couple of weeks ago too, and my take is the heat’s to blame again. I doubt anyone’s out here setting fires on purpose. Sure, in this case, the pasture went up first.
Sometimes, especially in spring, farmers will burn fields themselves, but I doubt that’s what’s happening now. They wouldn’t risk it with this plot so close to their farms and other folks’ homes.
As I’m typing this, I can still see smoke rising from the woods when I glance out the window, which means the fire’s not tamed yet. I don’t get why they aren’t using choppers to dump water on it.
Guess we’ve reached such a gross level of indifference from our so-called leaders that they can’t be bothered to spend resources on doing the right thing. They sure as hell find plenty of cash for their special pensions and allowances, all from taxpayer money.
I hope the fire doesn’t get close to people’s homes, but at least the pasture seems to be in the process of “burning back better”. Next week, we’re supposed to get some rain and way cooler temps, but until then, we’re stuck dealing with this heat...That’s about it from me. Wishing you all a great day, and I’ll catch up with you next time.
Thanks for your attention,
Adrian
