A heartfelt Toast-creative fiction prompt

Kareem was the one who spent his entire childhood around Becky. They both grew up together, had a lot of memories together, they went to the same school and college. They had very similar interests. They both were inseparable friends and people and their families thought that they would end up together.

They both had different personality traits. Kareem was not expressive at all. He hated being surrounded. He was an introvert. On the other hand, Becky was more inquisitive. She did not have problems in socializing at all. This is why both of them pursued different careers.

They both were very caring for each other. It was around the time of new year when Becky shifted to California for 6 months. Kareem felt shattered. He was unable to figure out why he was feeling this much of pain and he should be happy that his best friend is progressing towards her career. It was the pain of separation that made him realize that Kareem loves Becky.

After a few months, Kareem expressed his feelings to Becky and Becky was puzzled. She did not know how to respond to that. She had no such feelings for her best friend. Moreover, she was in love with her colleague who had proposed her a few weeks back. It was soul wrenching for both of them. Becky told him that she loves him but only as a friend. She saw this relationship as something very valuable and precious for her. She knew that if she came into this relationship, it would destroy their friendship.

As the days passed, they both grew apart. They stopped calling each other for days now. One day, Kareem heard a knock on the door and saw Becky. Shocked, he invited her in and the conversation started over a cup of their favorite cappuccino. Becky said," Kareem, we have been friends for our entire lives. I do not want to end this relation at any cost. I care about you a lot. But, we are not the right people for each other. I am getting married to Tom and I want you to be with me on this very important day of my life."

Obviously, Kareem had tears in his eyes. It meant that all the chances of them being together were over. He said that he needed some time to decide and he will let her know.

On the day of the wedding, the beautiful bride was surrounded by so many people, but her eyes were constantly searching for her best friend. There he was! Standing at the gate constantly telling himself," I cannot be selfish. I cannot be selfish." He went in and greeted both the groom and the gorgeous bride. At the feast he stood for the toast and said," Becky, the most beautiful person I have ever seen, the most understanding and the most caring. I am sorry that I could not be with you when you needed a friend. I wish you a life time full of happiness, joy and cheerfulness, may you live a prosperous life with your husband and have healthy kids. We all love you Becky, never stop smiling."

Tears rolled out of Becky's eyes. She was so happy and relieved that her friend had finally moved on and had accepted the beauty and strength of their friendship. She badly need this toast. It came as a sigh of relief for both of them. Kareem needed this closure in the form of toast otherwise his feelings would have been clogged. He felt free, relieved and joyful after the toast. He knew that life has a peculiar way of throwing opportunities at us. It is upon us how we grab those opportunities and make right choices.

Thank your for your time.

Love is sweet but can be bitter when things go awry or unexpected. Sometimes we just have to move on — Kareem totally understood this fact.

I could really feel Kareem's heartache over losing that romantic hope with his lifelong best friend Becky. But the way he put those feelings aside to fully support her marriage was so beautifully selfless. That toast at the wedding was just the perfect bittersweet moment - you could tell how much he cared for her happiness, even if it wasn't the way he dreamed. Stories like this really capture the messy complexities of love, friendship and letting go in such a relatable way. Loved the realness of their bond and Kareem's growth. Nicely done!
