Your Choice To Make

I’ve seen people meet each other on social media and get married. I’ve also heard of death cases where the deceased was killed by an online stalker. There are others who got jobs or connected with others and got big contracts from social media too. So you see, I’m saying both positive and negative things all together, and I think that’s the kind of package you get from social media.
I remember some years back, maybe 2019, or 2020, there was this guy who went all around insulting people on twitter and then later went for an audition. I don’t exactly remember what he auditioned for but the judges brought up that tweet. And in the tweet, he was saying really bad things about one of the judges. They asked him if that was his account and he admitted it.
From there, he went rogue and insulted so many prominent people, even the president of Ghana. Somewhere last year or so, he even got picked up by a top security agency and according to what I heard, he was tortured or something like that. Ever since that incident, it’s almost as if he has no reputation. Nobody wants to associate themselves with him in anyway.

But the thing is this guy had a chance to build a solid brand, to build a great online presence but he chose to rather go the other way. Maybe he started by insulting people but I believe that he could have just apologized and then turned a new leaf. But he didn’t because he got sucked into whatever power he thought he had with his little followers.
There’s also this other person who got heart broken and then wanted to kill himself. He brought it online and of course, people laughed at him but others also were there for him. He was invited for interviews and other media rounds and now, he’s built a solid brand online and working with big brands.
So you see, if you ask me, social media is whatever you choose it to be. If you want it to build you up, it would and if you want it to destroy you, it can perfectly do that for you. I always say that there’s this kind of power social media gives to people and if you are not cautious, you just get lost in it. So do you want social media to build or destroy you? The choice is all yours.

You are explicitly right, Abenad. Social media is what we see it to be. It all depends on every individual’s opinion about it. Life comes in two directions- either good or bad and we are left responsible for whatever outcome we get based on what we do with it.
