Living For The Thrill #228

When I saw this prompt, I asked my mom if she thinks I’m spontaneous or live by a routine. She laughed and said “you! routine?, do you even know what a routine is?” And that’s truly summarizes all that I’m about to say.

Growing up in a house full of boys, there was nothing like routine. My parents tried several times to make follow this “time table” they made for us. We knew we had to take breakfast in the morning, lunch in the afternoon, supper in the evening. We also knew all chores had to be done in the morning but then we never stuck to any of it.

I, for instance, could just up at anytime and do something I was supposed to do hours ago. My brothers could also just get up and do something way earlier than the actual time they had to do. Funny part is, at the end of the day, everything would still be done as they expect them to be. And anytime I remember my childhood, these are the memories that make me laugh.

Years after I grew up, I found myself in places where I had to stick to routines. And I really struggled to get by each and everyday because I had no idea how to do that.
Eventually, I learned how to make things work out for me without having to strictly stick by certain patterns.

So, if you ask me about having a routine and being spontaneous, according to what I’ve experienced, I would say having a routine comes with peace. There’s this kind of peace that accompanies routines. You know you have to do something at this time so you do it and tick it off your box.

Spontaneity on the other hand comes with the fun part of life and a little chaos. But the fun part is what makes it more rewarding I believe. Thinking about how spontaneous my life has been, I would like to believe life should be lived spontaneously most times with a little routine here and there.

I don’t know for others but I easily get bored with routines. Wake up, do that and do this. Oh come on. I want to wake up one day and just say “whatever. I want to have breakfast at the safari” and then be on my way to eat while watching lions. Or just pass by the beach during my lunch period from work with no prior plans, just to surf the waves. Don’t you think that is more thrilling? And that’s the fun part of life.

Maybe routines can be for the other parts of life; Professional and academic? Just Maybe. Any other part of life should be lived spontaneously, I believe. After all, we only have one life to live, isn’t it?

Wow, your reflection on routine versus spontaneity is such a refreshing dive into the dynamics of life, @abenad! It’s fascinating how your upbringing shaped your approach to structure—and the lack of it—so naturally. It’s almost poetic how, despite the chaos of your "boyhood house," everything still got done in the end.

The way you describe spontaneity—having breakfast at the safari or sneaking off to the beach for an impromptu surf session—makes it sound like life itself becomes the canvas, and you’re the artist painting outside the lines. There’s something undeniably thrilling about embracing the unexpected and letting the winds of impulse guide you.

And yet, your acknowledgment of the peace a routine can bring shows a sense of balance—you’ve managed to extract the best of both worlds. While routine may hold life together like a framework, spontaneity is what breathes color and excitement into that framework. It’s like a dance between reliability and liberation.

I think you’ve beautifully captured what makes life meaningful and exciting, and it’s inspiring.

That’s exactly my point and I like how you described it as me being the artist, painting outside the lines however I want it. I’m glad you really get the perspective I’m coming from.
Thank you so much.

Oh, if only I could! Demands from family, job and other commitments keep me from spontaneity! Someday, I will do just that-wake up with zero plans and let the day just happen.

I'm glad you have more freedom! Take care and enjoy those times!

Embracing spontaneity is a game-changer. It injects excitement and thrill into ones life, making every day an adventure. By living in the moment and making the most of every second, one can discover a deeper sense of joy and fulfillment. Routines can be boring. But they should be a balance like you said especially with professional life and academic.

Your childhood memories add a charming touch, and your perspective on balancing structure with adventure makes me rethink the way I approach daily life. The playful tone and the idea of just deciding to have breakfast at a safari or lunch by the beach make it even more enjoyable to read!

I love having a spontaneous routine and often I follow a spontaneous routine. I like flexibility and my health demands a flexible lifestyle. It's not always possible to stay spontaneous but I love to have free days for myself...

Thanks for sharing...

I agree with you, life should be fun after all we only live once ( YOLO), though there should be a balance.

If I had a gun to my head and the only way to save my life would be to follow routines for a week, I'd better start calling everyone to say goodbyes. Lol, I can't follow routines to save my life.

And you growing up amidst boys? Lol, definitely a bye bye to routines.

A little bit of spontaneity is a spice of life upon an ocean of routine. There are times I wish I could simply afford to travel to somewhere I have never been before like Hong Kong or Tokyo just for fun. I'm just becoming too rigid like an old person.

It would be very relaxing not to have established routines, no rush or schedules, just get up and do what we please as you say. Without so much trouble for sure many would have a better emotional and even physical health. I love reading you, greetings!
