Functional Depression is a thing?

Until today, I would have even laughed at anyone for mentioning functional depression. I didn’t know it was an actual thing that existed until I confided in someone today.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been happy, active, smiling and all the other great emotions you can think of but I’m always complaining to my mom that I feel unfulfilled. She would normally say I should write all the things I’ve achieved and soak them in to understand how far I’ve come in life.

To be honest, they always made me grateful and happy but it was always for a moment. I found out later that the kind of happiness I was feeling was the one derived from happenings which was why it was always short-lived.

Fast forward to today, I was talking to this old friend of mine and she was suggesting that I could be facing functional depression. After further discussion, we realized I wasn’t experiencing anything like that. But I opened my eyes so wide when I realized she mentioned functional depression. I asked her so many times, How is that even a thing?

Well, unfortunately, it’s a real thing that people experience. It starts with you feeling like you are doing nothing even though you are always doing something. For me, this part was a little confusing because there are times when I do a lot but in the end, I still feel like I didn’t do anything. But that happens when I don’t have a plan so this is different.

You also just suddenly disconnect from any form of social interactions and build an unconscious cage for yourself. You might even experience physical symptoms like consistent headache or stomach aches. These are the things I was told today and I just wanted to share with you all over here. I believe many people are experiencing this but don’t even know what it is. Here you go.

I would suggest that we shouldn’t be brushing off whatever we feel in life. Sometimes we just put the emotions overwhelming us aside thinking they’ll go on their own. Interestingly, I found out today that those feelings we sweep under the rug still stay with us and as we live with them, they makes us feel off no matter how things are going for us.
