Another Thing We Underrate

I remember the first time my mom told me I couldn’t marry my brother. I was around 7 years old and didn’t really understand what marriage itself was, but I remember being so angry at my mom. And I also made up my mind that if she wasn’t going to allow me to marry my brother, then I wasn’t also going to allow her to marry him either.

I don’t even know how the whole marriage thing started, but I remember finding out that at a point in almost everyone’s lives, they stay with someone. And for me, my choice was my brother because it would be easy staying with him. So my plan was to go to school, do all that I had to do and when I was ready to marry, just choose this man who came from the same womb as me. After all, life doesn’t have to be so hard.

Fast forward to today, my nephew’s iPad was taken away by his mother because of “too much screen time". And then he stole his mom’s phone to call and report her to me. I had to take my time and explain for him to understand why the iPad was taken away. I reminded him how he’s even been endlessly complaining about his eyes and how he’s been struggling to wake up early to go to school.
I further went ahead to explain the repercussions of too much screen time and made him know it’s either he listens to his mom or wears big ugly goggles for the rest of his life. He understood and agreed not to stay on his iPad all day.

His mom was actually surprised that for the first time, his son actually listened to someone. So I asked her if she explained to him why she was taking the iPad away, and she said no because she felt he wouldn’t understand which threw me off.

That statement made me realize that the reason why I was angry at my mom when she told me I couldn’t marry my brother was because she didn’t explain why. I only got to find out in school how marriage actually works and what it even meant. And I know people would say in her defense, she thought I was too young and probably naive and wouldn’t understand.

And I think that’s where people get it all wrong when it comes to the younger generation, especially in my part of the world. The world is changing and the understanding of kids isn’t as “little” as we actually think. Kids of today are smarter than we think and would definitely understand if you explain things to them. Anyway, my mom doesn’t know this, but I’m still mad at her for not letting me marry my brother.

Kids today are far more clever than we when we were kids, you can't talk to them anyway you like, more knowledge it's required to get them understand and obey you as a parent or guardian, infact I always marvel when I hear them make some strange sentences.
Your article is great, do you still want to marry your brother? Lol

My neighbor’s son told someone something and we had to ask if our neighbor asked him to say it because it was hard to believe he thought of all that by himself.

Lol… no. That was a joke.

Yes it's hard but sometimes they are the that comes up with such thinking, no one told them anything.

Yes my neighbor's daughter told me to go and get pregnant and have my own baby and stop coming to their house to carry her baby, if not that I have been with them for a while I would have thought that the parents told her such

Being a kid and holding a grudge against your mother for not allowing you to marry your brother is understandable but for you to still be angry with her till now is uncalled-for.

Children nowadays are very smart and intelligent,so we need to let them understand how things work in other to avoid unnecessary drama.
Thank you for sharing @abenad

Still mad at her? Lol
Children always need that answer to satisfy their curiosity. And when they're denied of that, it leads to what your post has captured. I think parents can do better, especially with the nowadays children, who happen to know more than their age even.

Exactly. Children of today will just wow you with their level of understanding.

This may seem like a really trivial issue but a very important one. Explaining things, especially to kids, leaves little to no room for misinterpretation. Many kids just misinterprete matters like "my parent doesn't like me or doesn't want the best for me" but that isn't always the case. I like that you took out the time to explain to your nephew.

And that’s because they go like “you’ll understand when you are older”. Of course I’ll understand when I’m older because you’re not giving me the chance to get it now.

You must really like your brother 😂I can't be in the same room with my brothers for an hour without a screaming fit happening

Kids wouldn't understand if you don't communicate with them, they always want to know why, how when and all in simple terms

Lol, your last sentence makes me laugh 😂, most parents just assume kids won't understand hereby not trying to explain things to them.

I really love your conversation with your nephew and I hope that the mother will learn from your example and starts explaining things to him instead of just commanding him to do what she wants.

Oh yes. I’m sure she knows better now and would do that henceforth.
