A Ringtone To Remember

98 percent of the time, you’d find my phone on silent and I cultivated that habit at the university. I used to put my phone on silent before entering lecture halls. And then as days went by, I started leaving it there because what was the point putting it back on normal? After all, I was going to go back to class the following day or even church which of course I would have to put my phone on silent mode again.

The 2 percent of the time you’d find my phone ringing, it’s probably the default ringtone of the phone but…
There was this time in school. I was friends with this guy who eventually came to like me. And I was those “marry your books and give birth to success” type so I wasn’t even minding him. He kept pushing it, doing all the nice things. Doing everything right.

Gradually, I began to start looking in his direction and I remember telling my roommate about it. I wanted to say yes to him and also do campus goals, after all what was the worse that could happen?
Well, the worse that could happen was worser than I thought. My roommate told me about the guy’s girlfriends and side chicks on campus. I was shocked because this was someone who appeared as Angel Gabriel.

I decided to confront him with evidence and he denied it. To say I was shocked was an understatement. The fact that he denied being in that video with one of the girls just blew my mind. What was more shocking was the fact that days later, he came to say he was the one in the video but he was drugged so he didn’t know what he was doing.

I remember getting up from my seat to clap for him because oh wow! I know people can lie but this particular person sounded like he had a degree in lying. Right after that, I customized his numbers with a particular song by Rihanna and Eminem, I like the way you lie because I actually liked the way he lied. I told him I was going to go for lessons on how to lie like that because I hadn’t seen any liar like that in my life.

Anytime my phone rang in the room with the song, we just knew Mr Liar boy was calling. My roommate and I would perform the song till we realize the call was about to end. In fact there were days we just sang along and then I would later call him back. I remember how it would start with “on the first page of our story, the future seemed so bright” and then we would just act it out with so much passion because the future I had with Mr Liar boy actually seemed so bright.

Now that I think about it, that was so dramatic of me but what is life without a little drama?
