October 10: The Beginning of Everything / 10 de octubre: el inicio de todo (eng-esp)

Hello, friends at Hive.

Today is a very special day for Cubans. October 10, 1868, marked the beginning of our wars of independence.
This is a day of celebration and of great significance for us. It is the day, the event that marks our rebellion and desire for independence and equality among all Cubans.

It all began here, at the La Demajagua sugar mill.

Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, a free Cuban of good social standing, opposed Spanish rule. Along with other Cubans, he conspired to rebel and overthrow the government.
But someone betrayed him, and when Carlos Manuel, who planned to rise up several days later, learned that they were coming to capture him, he put all his plans into action.

This was the bell rung to rally the Black slaves. That day, the meeting was different. Carlos Manuel granted them all their freedom.
Then he invited them to join the fight to liberate Cuba.
But he always emphasized that they were free to choose: either leave or join the fight.

The mill was attacked from both land and sea. Only a portion of the wall and the cogwheel remained standing.

There's a most incredible story about this cogwheel and the tree that imprisons it.

Every year, Cubans make a pilgrimage to what is now the Demajagua Museum and tell us the story.
This tree we see in the photo is not the tree that grew imprisoning the cogwheel.
That tree died, and in its place, a child of the same tree grew and took its place. This is what we see here.

This is another story that moves Cubans on this special day.

It is a special day and place for Cubans. That's why many pay tribute, not to the site, but to what it represents for everyone.
Like Arnaldo Tamayo, who planted this royal palm tree, one of our national symbols, on January 8, 1981.

These stained-glass windows tell part of the story. They're beautiful, and I wanted to show them to you.

As I already told you, the important thing is not the place, but what it represented and represents for Cubans.
On October 10, 1868, the War of Independence began by granting freedom to black slaves and inviting them to join the fight as equals.
This war didn't end until January 1959.
However, for Cubans, it remains a symbol of struggle, rebellion, equality, and independence.
That's how we always celebrate it.

Hoy es un día muy especial para los cubanos. El 10 de Octubre de 1868 marcó el inicio de nuestras guerras de independencia.
Este es un día de celebración y de gran significado para nosotros. Es el día, el hecho que marca nuestra rebeldía y ansias de independencia e igualdad entre todos los cubanos.

Todo comenzó aquí, en el Ingenio de La Demajagua.

Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, cubano libre y de buena posición social, se opinía al dominio español. Junto a otros cubanos conspiraron para rebelarse y derrocar al gobierno.
Pero alguien traicionó y cuando Carlos Manuel, que pensaba alzarse varios días después, se enteró que lo venían a capturar, adelantó todos los planes.

Esta era la campana que se tocaba para reunir a los negros esclavos. Ese día la reunión fue distinta. Carlos Manuel les dió la libertad a todos.
Luego los invitó a unirse en el combate para liberar a Cuba.
Pero, siempre hizo énfasis en que eran libres de elegir: o se iban o se unían a la lucha.

El ingenio fue atacado desde mar y tierra. Solo quedó en pie esta fracción de muro y la rueda dentada.

Hay una historia de lo más increíble con esta rueda dentada y el árbol que la aprisiona.

Cada año los cubanos peregrinan por lo que hoy es el Museo de la Demajagua y nos hacen la historia.
Este árbol que vemos en la foto no es el árbol que creció aprisionando la rueda.
Aquel árbol murió y en su lugar, un hijo del mismo árbol creció y tomó su lugar. Es este que vemos aquí.

El historiador de “La Demajagua” nos hizo la historia de aquel museo y de estas piezas que ven aquí.
Esta es otra historia que emociona a los cubanos en este día tan especial.

Es un día y un lugar especial para los cubanos. Por eso muchos le rinden homenaje, no al sitio, sino a lo que representa para todos.

Como ya les dije, lo importante no es el sitio, sino lo que representó y representa para los cubanos.
El 10 de octubre de 1868 comenzó la guerra de independencia al darle la libertad a los negros esclavos e invitarlos a unirse al combate como iguales.
Esta guerra no concluyó sino hasta enero de 1959.
Sin embargo, para los cubanos, sigue siendo un símbolo de lucha, de rebeldía, de igualdad y de independencia..
Así lo celebramos siempre.
