Today I'm going to show you the iconic hotel of my country: The Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

Opened in 1930 and with more than 450 rooms, it is undoubtedly the most famous hotel in my country. But don't get me wrong, my intention isn't to promote the hotel, but rather to show you some of the curiosities and beauties that the building itself holds and that we can enjoy without having to stay there.

This hotel was attacked with 75mm cannon fire and automatic weapons in October 1933, collapsing several balconies, part of the facade, and destroying furniture and decorations.

The intention was to stop a mutiny led by the deposed president, Gerardo Machado.

On December 20, 1946, the infamous "Havana Summit" took place, led by Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky. Other mobsters of the time also participated, such as Vito Genovese, Frank Costello, Santo Trafficker Jr., and Albert Anastasia, among others.

Francis Ford Coppola himself recreated this summit in the second part of his classic film, "The Godfather."

In those early years of the hotel, it was very common for Cubans to travel to the United States and vice versa.

Sometimes, even just for breakfast or business meetings.

In fact, the opening of this hotel coincided with the final stage of Prohibition in the United States, so Americans came to Cuba, and especially to this hotel, to vacation and indulge their vices of alcohol and gambling.

This is an iconic building in my country from the very moment of its construction, as it represents the essence of Cuban Creole identity: the blend of all the cultures and nationalities that genetically shape who we are.

Its design features roofs that resemble classical Roman architecture;

The courtyards and plinths feature Sevillian mosaics. The interior arcades are a reinterpretation of the Southern Californian style.

The gargoyles are from the French Gothic period, and the granite floors show Art Deco influence. The beautiful gardens were designed in the European Romantic period.

To give the landscape a more exotic, paradisiacal appearance, a family of peacocks was brought in, which have reproduced and populated the hotel's inner courtyard.

To top it all off, it was the first time that, for a project of this magnitude, all the materials used in the hotel's construction were local and native. Nothing was imported. The building was even constructed preserving the natural structure of the surrounding environment.

The caves of Tángana and the cannons that were part of the island's defense during the Spanish colonial period in the 19th century can still be explored.

I could continue providing interesting facts and thousands of anecdotes about this incredible hotel, especially considering the immense number of personalities of all kinds who have stayed in its rooms.

Just look at the photos and historical objects in this hall of history and you can get an idea of ​​that era of splendor.





It's a charming, almost paradisiacal spot, ideal for enjoying the afternoon, sitting down to listen to good Cuban music, and taking in the scenery of Havana's northern coast.

Hoy vengo a mostrarles el hotel insigne de mi país: El Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

Inaugurado en 1930 y con más de 450 habitaciones, es sin duda el hotel más famoso de mi país. Pero, no se equivoquen, que mi intención no es hacerle promoción al hotel, sino mostrarle algunas de las curiosidades y bellezas que guarda el edificio en sí mismo y que podemos disfrutar sin tener que estar hospedados en él.

Este hotel fue atacado con fuego de cañones de 75mm y armas automáticas en octubre de 1933, derrumbando varios de los balcones, parte de la fachada y destruyeron muebles y adornos con su ataque.

La intención era la de detener un motín por parte del depuesto presidente Gerardo Machado.
El 20 de diciembre de 1946 se realizó la muy famosa “Cumbre de La Habana”, dirigida por Lucky Luciano y Meyer Lansky. En ella también participaron otros mafiosos de la época como Vito Genovese, Frank Costello, Santo Traffcicante jr, Albert Anastasia, entre otros más.

El mismísimo Francis Ford Coppola recreó esta cumbre en la segunda parte de su clásico “El Padrino”.
En aquellos primeros años del hotel, era muy usual que los cubanos viajaran a los Estados Unidos y viceversa.
En ocasiones, incluso solo para desayunar o tener reuniones de trabajo.

De hecho, la inauguración de este hotel coincidió con la última etapa de la ley seca en los Estados Unidos, así que los norteamericanos venían a Cuba y, sobre todo a este hotel, a vacacionar y saciar sus vicios de alcohol y juegos.

Este es un edificio icónico en mi país desde el mismo momento de su construcción, ya que representa la esencia del criollismo cubano: la mezcla de todas las culturas y nacionalidades que forman lo que somos genéticamente.

En su diseño cuenta con techos que asemejan la arquitectura romana clásica;

Los patios y zócalos muestran mosaicos sevillanos. Las arcadas interiores son una reinterpretación del estilo sur californiano

Las gárgolas, son del periodo gótico francés y los pisos de granito son de influencia art deco. Los hermosos jardines están diseñados en el periodo romántico europeo.

Para darle mayor apariencia exótica, paradisíaca al paisaje, se trajo a una familia de pavos reales, los cuales se han reproducido y poblado el patio interior del hotel.

Por si fuera poco, fue la primera vez en que, para un proyecto de esta magnitud, todos los materiales utilizados en la construcción del hotel, fueron locales, autóctonos. No se importó nada. Incluso, se construyó el edificio preservando la estructura natural del entorno.

Aún se pueden explorar las cuevas de Tángana y los cañones que formaban parte de la defensa de la isla durante la época de la colonia española en el siglo XIX.
Podría continuar dando datos de interés de este increíble hotel. Anécdotas hay miles, sobre todo si se tiene en cuenta el inmenso número de personalidades de todo tipo que ha pasado por sus habitaciones.

Solo hay que mirar las fotos y los objetos históricos de este salón de la historia y uno puede hacerse una idea de aquella época de esplendor.

Es un sitio encantador, casi paradisíaco, ideal para disfrutar de la tarde y sentarse a escuchar buena música cubana y disfrutar del paisaje de la costa norte habanera.
