Social media college.
It's no doubt that our lives now revolve around the internet. And I can say that the advanced world we live in today is inclined towards the media. The way we see a lot of people live their lives nowadays, we can hardly tell who is who.
A lot of people get to have their lives upside down due to the pressure they give themselves through some other people's way of life on social media. There are a lot of fake lives online, most of which are not real.
One thing I know about social media is that anyone can type whatever they want online, capture anything, and then tag it with whatever they want people to view about them. There are some that are still real and kind of legit, but not all of them.
It might appear surprising that a young kid of this generation can successfully navigate through social media. If not for age restrictions, I would have said infants would have created their own social media accounts.
The worst side of it is that most of them don't know how to use social media. Since they were enlightened to it at an early stage, they got to believe and see it as it appears. The exposure they get at times is always way beyond what they can live by.
How about social media as a course at the university?
It would have been so good if we could understand what the media is all about. And there is the saying that “catch them young” means that it is easier to correct and adjust mistakes at the early beginning than when it's way too late.
We can testify that up to date it's not easy to forget all of those nursery rhymes we were taught back then, they keep ringing in our brains and that’s because we mastered and memorized them while younger.
However, the exposure to social media to underages might seem somewhat discouraging due to the fact that they might get distracted easily, even so, if they don't learn it at that age they can get to learn it elsewhere.
It's best if the merits and demerits of the media are exposed to students early. This would prevent them from falling into scams and becoming one, reduce the rate of pressure and oppression they get from others in the media, and also make them know how well they can make a good living from the media.
I attended a seminar a few months ago where they detailed how one could be earning from Facebook as a marketer and also earn on YouTube. These systems won't come open to everyone but to those who seek the secret knowledge about them.
That's why you see some people create content and make money from it, while some people waste their money on data just to watch the content others created. All of these need to be studied before one can find their path in that regard.
In conclusion
There is no harm in exposing students to social media. Allowing them to know the dos and don’ts of it, but when they are exposed, there should be some restrictions and follow-ups till they realize that they’ve understood what is required of them to understand social media.
This is my response to the HIVE LEARNERS weekly prompt in hive learners community for the Week 155 Edition 2 and the topic to be discussed is SOCIAL MEDIA
Some of these students don’t even know know how to sue chat gpt but let them open TikTok.😂
Social media education is very much needed in this generation even though we may feel like we know more than enough already.
That feeling is rubbish 😂. We don’t know anything. Just a little among them are those that traps the reward from the media
It will be very difficult to forget most of the nursery rhymes i was taught. It made school fun.
The work does not only stop at teaching them about social media, but it extends to guiding them and putting some restrictions
You are right about your points. Thanks for the response
Yes, many young people need to reevaluate their actions on social media, they really need support.
That’s just it. Hopefully it gets better over time
